need some encouragement

I've been trad sense 1980,but set it aside for about 4 years not enough time to hunt so didn't shoot much and now have a great place to hunt and the time, so far I've missed 3 deer hit limb on first one cut back hair on second one and just plane over shot the 1 this morning,they have all been under 10 yards.feeling really down.They say if you don't use it you loose it seems like I've lost it shooting game.

Sounds like you are putting pressure on yourself. Relax and have fun. You are getting some great opportunities, it'll happen.

Sounds like time to put in some practice from the same place you are hunting from. I have a big problem when I get in a tree stand, shooting high.

You will get an arrow in one , slow down your shot and really pick that hair you want to hit , burn a hole with your eye's right where you want that arrow to go. Just slow down and relax...

Well if you have had three shots at that range you are doing something right. Try to shoot at a 3D target from a treestand.

From one K-Mac to another...take a few deep breaths and re-focus! You are doing something right if your shots are at 10 yds.!! Don't be so hard on yourself...it will happen! Be cool!

Burn the visual hole before you begin your draw. If shooting in close and/or downward, are you canting your bow?

You hit a limb... Hey, it happens!!!!! (little un-seen things will get us every time, LOL)

You got back hair, and "just plain shot over the one this morning"..... This is consistent with not picking a spot.

Aim for the Elbow!!! It's Low, If he drops at the shot you'll still get him, The Heart lays right behind it, It's easy to pick out, and there's a little tuft of dark brown hair to focus on!!!!!

if your missing high then shoot for the lower elbow or lower heart,,, nobody misses under them so drop the next one and enjoy all the experience until then!

Beyond the excitement, I find two things lead to shooting high from a stand. First, is shooting at the whole deer instead of picking and concentrating on a small spot. I've lost count of how mqny times I've done this and it almost always goes high. This also goes for shots taken from the ground. Second is a shooting form issue, a combination of not getting the head and shoulders aligned with the shot. It is common and easy to just lower the bow arm when shooting down, but this kills your form alignment. You need to bend at the waist so that your "T" alignment is maintained. Don Thomas writes of this in the new issue of TBM and he is correct.

Hang in there Mac and it will happen. Try to put yourself in a type situation when you practice; that helps me a lot.

WEll, Ken...you're located in the best of it from what I hear tell...

Up here in NE TN, things are sparse... not much place to hunt best I can tell...most raise cattle and won't let you set foot on their land!!!

Might change in a few years as I get to know people, but at my age it is a race to see if I will learn places before I'm too old to get around!

Hunted in Spring out by Cookeville, and went back for early Oct bow, but the hurricane drowned us out.

YOu'll make it happen... takes time. more because we have to get used to the idea we can actually killa deer with our gear...

That bending at waist is key! I draw like I'm shooting horizontal and then bend and it works ok for ME

last year I missed a fork horn at 10 whole yards, a monster buck at the same distance, and most embarrassingly missed 4 times in a row at a 6 point not 20 yard away. Hang in there man. You'll get it. I buckled down, made a few changes and so far this year I am batting 1 for 1

Thanks for the offer K-mac, But I guess I'm committed to making it happen in Maine this year. I took a 30 year break from bowhunting. So now I'm chomping at the bit,but havn't seen ANY deer so far this season. I am a bit discouraged but I am not with out hope.

Some people, myself included, enjoy the self imposed limitations of deer hunting with traditional archery gear in areas with no deer.
