Hey all,

I enjoy reading the hog hunting threads cause I am trying to learn what I can and as much as I can. I'm not a young man anymore and I've missed a LOT.

I am in the Houston metro area and Sam Houston is in my back door, just about.  That and another WMA is likely where I'll have to try my hand this year.  But I wonder why there aren't that many threads talking about Hog hunting in Louisiana.  I see hunts planned fairly often for Georgia, Alabama and Oklahoma, but I don't think I've seen one for Louisiana or Mississippi.

Anyway, how is the hog hunting in Cajun country?  Is it better than Texas and the other popular hog hunting destinations?  I wouldn't mind learning about it too, the stare line is about a 2 hour drive for me, maybe less.  It might be fun to head over the line one of these days and hunt hogs over there.

I don't want to get ahead of myself though.  I just thought I'd ask and see what the situation is like with Louisiana hog hunting and are things like Texas where most of the state is private property and leased out?

Let's hear from you Cajuns on how your hog hunting is in your neck of the woods.  If I was to come down and go hog hunting, can you promise me I won't run into that ROUGAROU??

I don't want to run into that feller.

In Louisiana we tend to look at hogs as a secondary target.  Six deer limit and a long deer season keep most hunters chasing deer.  The pigs also become very nocturnal if pressure is applied to them.

In recent times however, they have gotten so numerous that guys have begun taking .22 mags into the woods during squirrel season for pork gathering.

Hogs down here tend get hunted hard year round on private land so they end up being a nightime target.  Deer season runs long and with a liberal limit so they do tend to be secondary targets of opportunity.  On the WMA's you can hunt them only during an open season, with whatever weapon is legal for that season.  That means bowhunters often deal with guys out squirrel hunting with shotguns or 22's walking around trying to take hogs.  They are a lot of fun to hunt though and I do hunt at least one WMA specifically to target hogs at least a couple times a year.

Hogs are incidental on the WMA's here as has been stated. This weekend I went to a local WMA and saw a doe my first sit but the slew I was in had 100 yards of tore up dirt from hogs so you keep your eyes out for both.

plenty of hogs if you want to go chase them.I took my fist bow hog of the season last week. i could go back and get some more but the freezer is full. if you are coming from tx start at the wma's by the sabine river. You should find some without much trouble.
