ok i got my squirrel saturday and ive had non iodine salt on it since.  how long do i leave it on there and do i take any salt off and put more on?

Minuteman

There sure is alot of air around a squirrel...eeyup.

Adirondackman

I have had good luck curing small hides. Clean method without messy solutions.

1.Flesh hide good - very important
2.Salt good and let stand one day
3.Whip salt and oils off and repeat step 2
4.Rub dry Borax into hide - let stand for 2 days.
5.Repeat step 4 two times.
6.Clean pelt with dry cloth
7.Rud in Neatsfoot oil - let dry
8.Repeat step 8

Pelt is now ready to use

That's just mean right there.  Are you trying to keep us too busy to hunt in your woods?  :-p

numbfinger

i read that and coulda swore it said repeat # 7!

guess i only read what i wanted it to say   :D

Adirondackman

Numbfinger you read my mind. Sorry that is what I meant. I must have been dreaming about hunting while writing this. Sometimes I feel like I'am repeating step 8 over and over again.

A Man? do you ever smoke your hides?
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

Jerry Jeffer -  I do plan to smoke the deer hide that I harvested this year. Never tried it with small hides. Have you tried it?
