I went out this morning and saw gobs of turkeys, but none within range, and I couldn't get a stalk to work. So, I went back this afternoon and found some birds that were feeding along in some thick brushy country. After a bit of a stalk, I closed to about 20 yards and made one jump with my shot, but didn't touch a feather. They decided that it might be a good time to leave, but I followed, and picked them up again about 50 yards out. I made a hurried stalk to within about 20 yards, picked the last bird in line, and let fly....

She went down immediately, but recovered for a moment and went down a bank, where a second arrow finished the job.

She will be a perfect bird for the dinner table, and now I can concentrate on a gobbler. Nice to have opening day success.

JD's Morningstar and Howard Hill heads did the trick.

The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.
