I'm getting a broadhead target for christmas I have never shot broadheads and need some help. I shoot a Damon Howett momba 55# @ 28". I draw 29". My erras are easton XX75 2117's My field tips are 125 gr. I will be hunting deer,hogs, and turkey. when and if I decide I'm competent enough to fling an erra at a live animal.

What do ya need, advice or ya want a few broadheads to try? Shawn

I like Razorcaps.

You can get Razorcaps in 125 for screwins.  There are LOTS and Lots of great heads.

Try to keep close to the 125 grains.

I like the 3 times longer than width heads as well.

Get the cut on contact BH. As stated above there are a lot of 125gr BH out there, so have fun and enjoy.

I prefer 2 blade eskimos (17yrs) for everything though I'd consider a big 3 blade for turkeys, or a 4 blade eskimo which will be my choice on longbeards.  

To many good heads out there really, ya gotta pick one and shoot it!   There's gotta be someone near you whose got heads you can try out.  

Some simple things to consider,

Width of head
steepness of blade angles
total number of blades
cut on contact or not

-To wide and it heeds penetration
-to steep of blade angle, same thing, and it can ruin heads (muzzy)
-to many blades, same thing, lack of penetration.
-COC obviously will give you the most most of the time.

Lots of variables to consider for you bow as a beginner but most trad heads will do well for you.  Take into consideration what you are shooting, bow weight, arrow weight, and game and you'll be fine.

I would suggest a Snuffer in 125 grains, they are easy to sharpena dn ya get 6 for about $25. If ya buy them buy the Snuffer Tamer sharpening kit. It works great and ya can sharpen 1/2 dozen heads in 5 minutes or so. Shawn

AKDan what does the steepness of blade angels mean?

if you shoot a cut on contact head, you wont need to worry about it.  

The steeper the angle of the blades, the more cutting a blade has to do.  Usually found on a replaceable blade style head, like say a Muzzy.   Not saying they are bad heads, just saying it doesnt help out in the penetration department when you're trying to FORCE a head through.  The more resistence applied, the more force it's going to take, the less it's going to penetrate on a lighter weight bow.

Snuffers, mangus, zwickey, and a host of others are all good heads from your setup for what you are trying to do.

AkDan Thanks for takeing the time to respond. I'll bet Ya'll get tired of answering the same questions all the time but it is much appreciated.  

I would like to recommend the Wensel Woodsman head.  I have shot 2 blade, 3 blade, and 4 blade heads.  Overall I think these are the best heads out there for regular hunting.  If you get into big game.  Elk, Moose, etc you might want to look into a 2 blade head.  But the Woodsman sharpens easy with file, diamond stone and finish with ceramic rod.  It penetrates well and leaves a good hole and they are priced reasonably.  For your bow set up I would recommend it over the snuffer.  In addition, when you get a chance I would try some carbon arrows like a easton axis 400 spine.  These will greatly increase the overall hunting performance of your bow.  I shoot a 56 lb Shafer Silvertip recurve and with alluminum 2018 or 2117 with 2 blade heads I might or might not get pass throughs on 100lb sized deer.  With axis arrows and 3 blade woodsman heads I haven't shot a deer in the last 2 years about 10 of them and not got a pass through.
