he's lucky he's not dead. that said, I hope they don't kill the sow. protecting cubs and a food cache should get her a free pass. also, I probably could not hit a SCHOOL BUS with a .44 in those circumstances, mush less a grizzly!

Just another good reason why I wait until first light to walk to my stand. Don't have any "griz" here in Jersey but plenty of blackies. We can't carry a handgun while hunting. In fact getting a permit FOR a handgun here is virtually impossible although it can be done. Bear spray is the only defense we can utilize. I can see why his spray was unavailable. Who hunts with it in their hand? Too much other stuff to carry and those bruins can be on you in a heartbeat.

I am glad it had a good outcome because it sure could have been worse.

The road to "Sherwood" makes for an awesome journey.

Looks like he missed with his fancy 44 mag.  It's been proven time and time again that bear spray works, keep it on your belt just like a handgun.

Interesting to learn the outcome of the sow and cubs by F&G...

You all should know the details first before you run your mouth about the guy and his gun, the sow or whatever.  bullelk posts on bowsite (compound guy) and is the guy that got bit.  Go there if you want facts.  Read the internet news poop if you want half stories.

Yikes!!! Sounds like he was really lucky!

One observation, if a bear intends to really do you harm, you are in deep, deep trouble but not for long. This guy was bitten by a bear and very, very fortunate that he was not seriously attacked considering there was a sow, cubs and a cached kill involved. As long as people venture into areas with bears there is chance for encounter, bear spray is no harder to get into your hand than a revolver and works. Two years in Yellowstone Park while living in MT. and 2 more working on the Alaska Pipeline have brought me to this opinion. If bears were as aggressive and dangerous as portrayed and widely perceived, you'd have to sign a waiver to enter National Parks and the Alaska Pipeline would never have been completed.
