I'm venturing into knifemaking.  I plan to use all the small pieces of scrap steels (high end stuff like Elmax, 3v, etc) to make some trade points for the St. Judes auctions.  Let me know what sizes and shapes you guys might be interested in.  I WILL NOT be taking orders for these as that's not an avenue I wish to pursue.  But, I would like to use up ever bit of scrap cut off that I can and for the life of me I can't think of a better cause to donate to.

The sky is the limit !  My own thoughts point toward a standard triangular shape, not stubby, but not 3:1 either, with a tang of enough width to fill a 23/64 shaft (and it can be filed down by the user to fit whatever they use) and maybe half inch length.  Sounds like a wonderful project !

If you do a Google Image search for "archery trade points" or something like that, you'll get more ideas than you can shake a stick at.

I think I'll shoot for about a 1" width, 2.25-2.5" length, single bevel grind, short tang and a couple small holes up front to allow for a lot of sinew lashing.  No clue about weight.  That ought to make some good sized heads for hunting most game.  In a tougher steel like Elmax or 3V these would be premium products for a traditional setup.  I'm looking forward to seeing a couple of these run through.  I might can even work up individual broadhead sheaths for them with the scrap cutoff from leather projects.

How thick is the material. Circular saw blades are a good thickness but not too heavy and make good trade points.
I like a 3/1 ratio but 2.5/1 works well too.
Abowyer make a good trade point as far as shape, size, thickness and weight.

Thickness will vary depending on what I'm making it from but I can always grind it down if it's something like 1/4" thick stuff that's obviously way too thick.

I've done a bunch of different styles from simple halfed heads to posts that slide into carbon shafts...try searching team tippit.

Here's one I made several years ago out of saw blades. I killed a doe with it and lost it but I have another I can take apart to show the peices. It locks solid and after glued on and mounted shot excellent.

 

 

I had never seen a 4 blade trade point and just had to try it. These picks were before I sharpened them up and they weighed around 160g after.

I think the best looking head of all time is an Ace Standard. It has the perfect profile with that thick front third. For me it's the quintessential trad head.
