I've been reading on here for a couple of years about you guys stump shooting and have thought it would be fun, but just haven't ever tried it.  Once hunting season ends, I have several other hobbies that I get started on, and once they come to an end for the year, it's so hot down here that I don't want to go walk around in the woods, and it usually stays pretty warm all the way up through opening day.  Well I was sitting on the couch today and my 9 year old son walks up and says he wants to go "exploring".  We had a cool front move through this week and the temp is down a little so I say why not.  He mentions wanting to go to the watergate, which is about a 5-10 acre public swimming/camping area that adjoins the south side of my property.  It's an open grassy property with a few scattered trees and about a dozen large rotten stumps where they cut some of the trees a few years back and it hits me that I have a perfect stump shooting range right out my back door.  So we grabbed our bows and exploring we went.  It was a blast "sneaking" up on unsuspecting stumps.  I really don't know why I haven't done this way before.  The really cool part is I was able to wear flip flops.  By the way, this is in the middle of nowhere and rarely has anybody there.  I checked to make sure it was empty before we started flinging arrows.

Yeah stump shooting is a blast. That cool front cooled things off here pretty good also.

Glad you guys got out.

I've always enjoyed it. Stumps, flowers, pinecones, nothing's safe, lol. It's really good practice.

Yeah, I usually find a leaf or pine cone or something to take a few shots at before climbing down at the end of a hunt, but this was my first time going out just to stump shoot.  My son loved it.  Now I need to find a couple more guys to go with us.

I love bush whacking and stumping,  so does my dog  :)   I pretty much always take my bow with me when I go on trail hikes too.  Today we are going Huckleberry hunting,  the bow is coming too.

Great post. My kids love the outdoors and I'm thinking this is another way to get out there a little bit more.

Thanks guys.  I did a double take on yours OregonTom.  With everybody on here seeming so much like myself, I sometimes forget that we don't all live right down the road from each other.  Our huckleberries here in N Louisiana get ripe in early June, sometimes even the last week of May.

Right on Matt. Punching holes in paper and foam gets real old really quick. So many things to shoot at on a "stumping" rove. Good, no, make that excellent practice for range estimation. Your son looks like he had a great time. Keep it up.

Now you are addicted.
Best fun there is next to hunting itself.
