I am setting up a bow and arrow combo for hunting season, and I don't know if I will hunt it much, but it will be fun. Forty something years ago my dad bought a 1971 Kodiak Magnum, 50#, because it was the only hunting weight recurve to be had  the evening of opening day in a discount store somewhere near Atlanta, Michigan in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula. He had  a limb blow up that afternoon shooting his late-50's Grizzly. From the first, he didn't like the K Mag, especially the finger pinch and how the poundage stacked on as he got beyond 28". But he  gave it spray can camo job and for all his griping, he never bought another recurve and shot a couple bucks with that K Mag before he switched to wheelie bows in the mid-70's. Ive picked up a couple K Mags along the way and I just never became a big fan ( although a 45# 1967 lefty I traded Denny Sturgis for was more fun than a new puppy!)

My Dad let me get his old K Mag out of his basement and take it home  recently and I got a new string for it,  replaced the shelf and side plate that had lost shape over the years and set brace height, new nocking points and cat whiskers on the new string. When I was with Dad in the basement he pulled out  a pile of arrows he had picked up at garage sales, most of which were way too stiff or short, but there were three Easton Gamegetter 1920's, 30", in worn but good shape. I haven't seen 1920 or 2020 aluminum arrows in decades. So this morning I got out the K Mag and those 1920's and took them for a trial run.

After getting used to longer bows, I wont be shooting at game out beyond 25 years with this outfit, but its got a great inside game and if I get a deer with it, I'll be rocking to some Marvin Gaye, Temptations, Three Dog Night while I'm butchering.

I've adopted too many bows that needed a good home.

I recently traded into an old K Mag and with my 29 inch draw it is a little challenging but I have a ball shooting it.

I wish you luck in killing a deer with it. Hope to see some pix too

Great story about your dad, his bow, and the best part...you get to add to the history and experience the nostalgia. Thanks for sharing and good luck on the hunt!
