I've killed plenty of hogs and deer with the Helix 175 gr .. Also the woodsman 175 gr 3 blades .. Just ordered a couple of packages of Grizzly Stick Massai heads and Grizzly 175gr screw in heads in a left bevel .. Season starts soon and can't wait to try them on the first passing nanny !

The two blade VPA is the Penetrator and that is the head I will be using for elk in a couple of weeks...tough one piece broadhead that is relatively easy to sharpen, with a tanto style tip...it takes a while to get used to how small the 175 grain version is compared to other broadheads but that just helps them fly like field points...if you doubt that such a short head can be very effective just do some reading of Andy Ivey's experiences...Asbell's opinions aside it makes sense to me that a shorter, stiffer head is less likely to bend when hitting bone

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Heavy? I like the 300 grn. Steel Force two blade, single bevel Phat Heads on a 30.5" CX 250. They fly great out of my 50# bows. 13 gpp... total weight around 622grns.
yeah 175 grain head is heavy! i wouldn't shoot a 622 grain arrow unless i was shooting a 77# + bow. i guarantee with a 300 grain point and 13 GPP you do NOT have a flat shooter, it's more like a bowling ball on the end of a arrow and its hitting the dirt at 25-30 yards. [/b]
So my 908 grain Full Metal Jackets with 325 grains up front will have such an arcing trajectory I will not be able to shoot 25 yards...and I was foolish enough to use them for shooting 3D...wish I had seen this post before I tried that stunt...and btw those arrows shoot a chronographed 155 fps out of my 61 pound Cari-Bow

Heck they shoot pretty much that same speed out of my 60 pound 1960 Kodiak

Are you looking for glue on head at 175 grains or a screw in totaling 175 grains?

For a glue on the Ace Express is a great head coming in at 175. At 185 (probably wouldn't notice the 10 grains) the 2 blade Grizzly is a dandy too.  If you want a 3 blade glue on the Grizzly Instinct is a good choice.

If you're looking for screw in, VPA makes great heads.  Or you could put a long aluminum adapter in a Zwickey 4 blade Delta and that's a great head.

Are you going for sarcasm there or what? Can't really tell since you described a realistic problem...
Vegetarians are cool, I eat them with every meal!

I switched to heavy arrows 7 years ago,650 to over 700 grs out of bows in the low 50# range and have no trouble shooting them out to 30 yds.Out to 20 yds I notice no difference. After that there is a little but not the issue that you might think.I got used to the difference, the first shooting session.I initially built them for a moose hunt but like them so well,I'd never go back. They penetrate dramatically better and also resist the wind better and that's a big issue here.I'm as apt to have elk come by some of my stands as deer so I gear my arrows toward them. The heads are also fairly heavy.

If you're looking for a good glue-on 175 grain head, the Abowyer Wapiti and Brown Bear single bevels are very nice.

I took  gt1535's, installed 100gr brass inserts, 100gr broadhead adaptor, with a 160gr single bevel Grizzly's, they flew very fast and flat out of a Jack Harrison 2pc. LB @ 51# at my draw length.

  • Leon Stewart 3pc. 64" R/D 51# @ 27"
  • Gordy Morey 2pc. 68" R/D 55# @ 28"
  • Hoyt Pro Medalist, 70" 42# @ 28" (1963)
  • Bear Tamerlane 66" 30# @ 28" (1966)- for my better half
  • Bear Kodiak 60" 47# @ 28"(1965)

Ace Super Express last year for me.  Flew very well and had great results on deer and pigs.

I have been using the 175gn 2 blades and the 185gn Australian made Ozcut broadheads. Both excellent heads, well made and tough enough for whatever you  dish out to them.

Another vote for Simmons TigerSharks.

olddogrib

I've pretty much always shot 175 gr.  Home made(steel adapters)w/original woodsmen or VPA when I shot 3-blades.  Simmons Tigersharks now with 2-blade.
