New Target Recommendations....

Hey all,

I am going to pick up a new target and I need some recommendations.

The kind of target I want is the square bag type target that is solid, field point only type. The kind that the covering can be replaced if needed. I guess they are probably about 12 inches thick and the arrows are supposed to come out relatively easy. Morrell, BIG Shot and others are some of the brands you might have had.

The target I have now is a foam target I made out of blocks of foam I got from the local feed store. It is 9 separate blocks each 1x1x18". So my target is 3 feet square and 18 inches thick. It's a great target, but it's becoming a pain to swap around blocks and put new ones in and so forth. It would be much better to just get a new target that doesn't succumb to such stuff.

I want a target that is in the neighborhood of 24x24 inches and thickness not important as long as it does what it's supposed to. I also am going to be leaving it out in the yard where it is going to get rained on. No snow though....woohoo.

I don't know what the best choice would be. I don't want to spend over $75. Naturally, BIGGER is better. I like bigger targets. I would likely put 2 poles in the ground and tie the target up by the grommets that they have in each corner.

Besides, these type targets are bright, flashy and are nice looking targets, whereas mine is kinda not nice looking. It works, but that's about it as far as looks.

So...can you recommend one of these targets or give some positive comments on others that you might've used in the past?

I know that BassPro, Cabelas and probably Gander Mountain all sell these targets under their own brand, but are made by one of these other target makers.

Any help would be appreciated.

I got exactly what you describe, a Buckmasters brand, from Wal Mart last December on sale for $16. Has a good handle.

The best bag target I've owned is a Morrel Outdoor Range target. I think they run $100-120 though, but replacement covers are readily available. I shot that thing for 8-10 years. I've had some Yellow Jacket bag targets that held up good, and some that didn't hold up so good. Suspending it off the ground definitely prolongs the life of the target.

Once I bought my Rinehart Rhinoblock I pretty much lost interest in shooting any bag target...and I now have a second Rhinoblock but am still shooting the first one

Just my opinion, I would save my money and get a Rinehart block target. They will last 5 times longer than a bag target. You can shoot field tips and broadheads safely with a block target. And they are very portable.

I wouldn't mind having one, and the broadhead ability would be a plus, but they aren't that big. I do miss from time to time. Not often, but I do think a bigger target is better for me.

A BIG one of those guys would be MONEY for sure.

A compressed straw bail($11) w/ a rubber stall mat($25) as a backstop. Been shooting this setup for the past 3 years almost daily w/ 60+lbs bows. I hung the stall mat so it swings and use it to shoot my Snuffers into. If you shoot BHs that are similar in design as the Zwickey eskimos, you can shoot them into the straw bail. I have a compressed bail that's not under roof, so I put a old car floor mat on top of it and it's fine.

Bull dog has a lifetime warranty.
I have a range dog with the legs and it is large, durable and easy to pull arrows.

Save your money for a block target.
In the mean time, go to your local coffee shop or Feed store and pick up some burlap sacks, usually free. Then, stop by your big box store like Home Depot or Walmart in the morning and talk to a manager about getting some of the Saran wrap that the pallets are covered in. Also free as they usually throw it away.
Stuff them burlap sacks with the plastic wrap and sew closed with a piece of wire.

Boom! Free, or close to free, bag targets that will last a loooong time and will stop any arrow.

That was exactly my plan all along, but these targets work so well, I can't justify spending the money on foam. I've had the same target for the last 4 years and it's still going strong.

Are there any broadhead capable targets in the 24x24 inch size?

I like to shoot out to 35 or 40 yards sometimes. These little 12 inch square targets just ain't gonna be big enough.

If you know a seed dealer that sells soy bean seeds, you can get the nylon seed crates, cut out the baffles and stuff them with used silage plastic, farmers have no problem letting me take all I want. It is a higher grade material than any commercial target. You end up with a free 4 by 4 target with four useable sides that will last for many thousands of shots. I have about a dozen bags in the roof of my garage, and the silage plastic gets transferred when a bag is worn out, but I am going out and stuffing another bag just to cover more of my garage.

I just order a Morrel Outdoor Range today for $119 and Free 3-day shipping. I know thats more than you want to spend, but it'll be cheaper in the long run.

Gander Mountain has the Morrell Yellow Jacket bag target for $50 and replacement covers for $15. I have had mine for 5yrs and have replaced the cover twice. I hung mine from a homemade frame and it has held up well outside in the weather.
