We had a similar incident about 30 miles from home, several years ago. If I remember right, the diseased deer had escaped from "farms", and all deer killed in the area had to be taken to check stations, and tested before taking them out of the containment area for several years.

I know one guy personally that told me after the fact, that it was too much trouble to get his deer checked, so he didn't bother.  :eek:  

I don't believe any of the other deer tested, tested positive, and our DEC has stopped testing them.

We got it now to in Michigan. Confirmed a couple weeks ago. Aggressive measures are being taken to limit it.

It's spreading in MO too.  We have property that borders a county that recently found a few deer with CWD.  Our county used to have a 4-point on one side rule.  That's out the window now that the Conservation Dept wants to eliminate as many deer as possible.  There are some other major changes to bag limits.

MO Conservation Dept is top-notch, so I hope they're aggresive enough to prevent spread.

cwd was found at a high fence operation in central Ohio. I think it was 2 years ago. Holmes county, about 30 miles from where I've been hunting the last ten years.

These deer farms are a scourge and should be outlawed. I did my part towards that end during my career. Now others have to take it up.

They and their supporters like to claim they are private enterprise and in a free America they should be allowed to do as they please. However, not at the EXPENSE of so many others.

The greater good is at play here and should be the yardstick.

Testing has shown that CWD is transmitted through excreted bodily fluids in cervids.  That is why the NYSDEC banned feeding of deer when CWD was discovered.  Because of their social nature and grouping around a crib of cracked corn or commercial feed.  That being said, saliva is not the only bodily fluid excreted from deer.  Samples of dirt tested where deer urinated came back positive for CWD.  That could pose a possible exposure and transfer.  One can never know because it can years for CWD symptoms to become visible.  There is extensive research going on to get a better handle on this.  I believe Vermont banned the sale and use of urine based lures, synthetics are still legal.

Born, raised and live just east where Sugarcreek-Millersburg  happens to be the heart of the largest Amish community in the nation, and with a name like Yoder about confirms the lifestyle... There are a bunch of Amish deer farms, matter of fact there are probably more deer farms in that area than any place I've ever heard... Not to bash their sect, but the Amish have hosed up a lot of Ohio hunting...

I hate to hear this! I love hunting in OH, especially Holmes county!
