I messed up my chance.  I had our second season, April 27 - May 3 and hunted my new property north of Harrison.  I called in a great gobbler on May 2 at 6:45 and proceeded to rush my shot.  He was at full strut facing me at 10 yards and I told myself not to shoot the beard off, big mistake.  I ended up shooting between his body and wing producing nothing but a shower of feathers.  I could see him leaving through the brush and followed up, but there was no vital hit.  He was the only bird I saw in 3 days of hunting.

Good luck everyone.

Dave even though you missed has to feel good to have gotten the chance to hunt on that new prop.

I love the facing shot and always tell my self to shoot that Beard off.  Makes me concentrate on the spot.  That being said I recently had a great pot of feather stew from a bird I missed last weekend.

Well sitting here enjoying this warm sunshine and a pop tart thought I'd post. 1 Jake this morning called him in from a good distance but when he got to me I guess the hen out in the field farther was shakin her tail feathers better than my decoy so he quickly went to her to show off that oddly shaped fan lol. No more action since, but wow what a beautiful morning in the Michigan woods. Hopefully there will be more...

It was a very makeable shot.  I just rushed it.

David, it was nice to hunt it and see a nice bird.  My plots are coming in good and I got a list of foresters that can do a QFP plan for me.  The gent from Cadillac never got back to me, but I got about 6 to contact.

I did get a nice bear on camera, but he tore some things up around the place.  I haven't seen him since.

Good luck everybody! It's not the kills that keep me coming back. It's the adrenalin rush of getting the birds in close, gobbling, strutting and putting on a show that I enjoy the most. Or the birds that come in sneaky and quiet, head high, looking. I like to shoot turkeys as much as the next person, but for me, It's all about the excitement of those close encounters, win or lose.

Went out yesterday with the scatter gun (haven't shot my recurve but once or twice since November and don't trust myself shooting at a gobbler with it right now).  Was hunting in Ingham County and had four gobblers answering in the dark.  Called in a group of five jakes and two hens right after daylight, but no Toms.

Good luck to everyone headed out this weekend!

Time to do some Bear hunting is that the Gladwin unit?

David,

It is Gladwin unit and I think I have enough points.  I may wait one more year to see if they hang around for September.  Last year they disappeared in August.

It is crazy how many turkeys are on the place in the fall, but we don't get any fall tags.

My season started this past Monday but have been too busy to get out and hunt.  Hoping to correct that this weekend.

DP...I have felt your pain in the past...sometime those close shots are the toughest!
