Just a Jake, but man am I excited! This hunt only lasted about 10 minutes, but I'll take being lucky any day. Didn't get out until about 10:30 this morning and saw five Jake's about halfway down a hill and along the tree line. Went on past them and bailed out of the truck and got on the back side of the hill from them. Snuck up to the top of the hill with my Jake decoy in tow and peeked over the top of the ridge. The Jake's were about 75 yards out and headed the other way. Crawled to the edge of the woods and stuck the deek in the ground and got buried up the the buck brush and hemlock as best I could. Gave about three soft yelps and the Jake's came a running. Had about a basketball sized hole to shoot through and waited for one to fill the shooting lane.I had the decoy set at about 6 yards. When the first one came in to whip on my poor decoy I let him have it with carbon express heritage 150 shaft tipped with a four blade muzzy phantom. The arrow hit a little left of the feather I had picked out from my 50# Black Widow PSR. The shot broke the off side leg, but much to my surprise the bird flew up over the trees after I had rolled him with the shot. I sat tight for a few minutes replaying the shot and decided to head through the woods following his flight path. The under brush was thick and already pretty tall here in southwest Missouri and I was concerned with the recovery.I made it through the draw he flew over and popped back out into the open pasture to find my first bird with a bow about 50 yards down the tree line! I can't wait till next year!
