Stumping Arrows

I have been doing a lot of stump shooting at actual stumps around my place and lost two arrows this weekend. I lost a few more this winter.

I have just been using field points, and never loose an arrow due to damage from shooting stumps.

However I mostly loose arrows when shooting in thick woods with lots of undergrowth, and the arrow glances a little branch and zips off through the woods in some unknown direction. That is how I lost my arrows this weekend.

I have been eyeballing the Judos, but never used them. I am starting to think I need to do something as I am tired of loosing arrows. I have also seen one made with trimmer wire sticking out the side but don't remember the name, seems like they were out of Germany.

What do you guys use for actual stump shooting? Id love to see pictures of your stump'n arrows.

I use judos myself with excellent results, only lost one so far. Just ordered some sgt heads to try out as there heavier. Wanted my stumping arrows to match my hunting arrows closer. We'll see how they work out

I use Judo's almost exclusively. Lose less arrows, break less, than any other point I've used.

Judo's you won't be sorry. Need weight? Use steel adapters with the glue on version. Glue on style are 135 gr. Lot's of options with adapters.

Go judos, you wont regret it. Stumping is all the hunting I can do up here, so I have lost my share of fieldtipped arrows. After discovering judos the only arrows I have lost is due to rock-hits.

Those points that look like they are made with trimmer wire are made by Top Hat Archery called a Roving Crown. I use Judos they are worth buying if you do any stumping.

If you enjoy stumping a lot theres many things you can do to save on arrows being lost that are cheap and effective. Painting the shaft a bright color is one thats easy, and those work well for small game arrows as well. I dont know if you're using carbon or wood, but for carbon you can invest in a small digital grain scale (around $20 or so), from there certain wing nuts and hex head bolts make tons of "judo" points for very little money and are also devastating on small game. For wood arrows drilling into the side and inserting heavy gauge wire makes a head that doesn't disappear easy. I subscribe to Saxton Pope's philosophy on arrows where he says you should spend as much time searching for a lost arrow as it takes to make one, and failing to find it then, abandon the effort with the knowledge that they are fun to build (doesnt help the wallet though, haha).

I shoot aluminum arrow and as Cavscout mentioned, I use 3 pink feathers and pink cap wraps, with flo green nocks. Nothing in the woods matches those colors! Highly visible. Add a judo and this combo is near impossible to loose.
I also make some great judos out of T nuts, a couple rubber faucet washers and a screw. They weigh in at 125 gr. I can made 6-8 judos for a fraction of the price.

Ace hex heads work good for me and are great for small game also.

I really like the judo style point in grasslands and brush. When I get into brush and rocks I grab for a Suanders Bludgeon point.

I have been using Hex heads (145gr) with an adder collar (25gr) this puts me at my 170 ish gr point weight. They don't bury but those solid stumps can still be hard on the arrows. :rolleyes:

Thanks guys. Where I shoot there are few rocks, and mostly leaves and understory brush. I am not sure if the Judos would grab enough in these conditions, but it would have to be better then FP's.

I wish I could remember the point I had seen that used the trimmer line. It was not the Top Hat, but some other company. It was cone shaped and the trimmer line was angled about 45 degrees forward. They also had some sort of dampening system that absorbed the shock of hitting rocks without damaging the carbon shafts.

BTW, I am shooting GT XT Hunters and Trads.I probably need to foot them, but have not been able to find an aluminum shaft to use for this.

Judos are great for low grass, but it is possible to lose them in a disked bean field. I lost two judo tipped cedars in one week two years back. what I do not like about judo points and wood arrows, they are difficult in a back quiver. They are tough to get in and can snag my Hill broadheads on the way out, even though I have a high and low divide chord. I much prefer just plain blunts on just plain wood arrow arrows, but those will snake, blunts with small HTMs will bounce out of sight. So I am going to take the suggestion about hex heads, if I remember right they come in a glueon version.

I use Tnuts size 1/4x20 I believe. Behind field point. I have to modify them by drilling or cutting the top collar down so field point will engage the threads in insert. I foot my carbons with aluminum. Keeps arrows from going too deep in stump and helps keep them from snaking under grass. Cheap and they work great. Get them at your local hardware store.

Judos are the only point I use for roving/stump shooting. They're the best head for it, IMO.
