I have several jars of bear fat that was boiled down to lard. I am just wondering if there is anything that this stuff is good for.

It's GREAT for cooking...Makes the VERY BEST pie crusts. Good on the griddle to cook pancakes as well  :readit:

If you'd part with 1 jar I'd do some experimenting for you. I would try to make up some water proofing for my boots, I might even be tempted to try cooking with it.

The road to "Sherwood" makes for an awesome journey.

Waterproofing for boots, ya do not have to melt it down just rub on with a piece of leather, very breiskly. I have used it mixed with bees wax for boots and it works great. Shawn

I agree with Iron Bull, it makes the most fantastic pie crusts you have ever eaten!!! but it has to be fresh, no good after long storage.

Never used bear fat but I've made boot dressing from rendered out deer fat and it's all I use for my leather stuff anymore.  Gave quite a bit of it away at the last two mojams so maybe someone else can give you an unbiased opinion.

If you are interested, give me a holler and I'll tell you how I made it.  There are a couple of tricks to getting the consistency you want and making it smell nice.

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

Makes a wonderful patch lube for muzzleloaders as well.

once it goes rancid you can make a clay bowl oil lamp and use as fuel for it.

Pie crusts EH? I've kinda lost mt appetite for pies after hearing that. Curtis told me that as well Vance. I hope neither of you guys opens a bakery!

One of the guys did use it on his boots while we were in camp, it soakeed in real good. We told him not to wear those boots bear hunting next spring.

leather boot dressing its the best you can get.just rub it in with your fingers walk around for a day then put more on where it absorbed into the leather.it will make the real soft and waterproof.

I use to render it down to oil in the over then freeze it in jars. Nancy used it like lard, for pie crust, and cookies. It makes good frying oil also. Bear fat was the pioneers lard and was used for just about everything from cooking to greasing boots. I imagine a fella could even put a little on his hair to slick it back....if he didn't have anything else    :archer:
