Thinking and Looking

Okay, I started hunting with a bow back in 1976, and mowed many yards and purchased a recurve way back in the day. I took several shots back then, but now I know that I was a 16 year old kid pulling way too many pounds.

I got a compound when they came out, and throughout the many years I've been alive, I have owned many, many compounds. I did buy a Hoyt Buffalo several years ago, and dang it, sold it when I was needing some money.

Well I've come to the conclusion that I may want another recurve to hunt with, at least hunt the many hogs we have on our lease. I'm must not sure if I want to drop a bunch of money, and looking for some ideas.

I've seen many people talk about the Sage Sammick, but not sure about this bow, or if I just want to drop $$ and get a really good one.

Just my .02 but if you're only thinking you might want to maybe try it - plunk down a couple hundred (or less if you shop around!) and get a nice green-wood 1970s era Bear in a poundage that you can easily shoot and play with it. If the desire is lurking underneath the surface to become a trad-archer, you will quickly move on to other bows but your money will not be wasted on the Bear. I still have my first one and it is a treasure to me!

The Sage shoots just fine. It is clunky feeling and looking. A LOT of them are off a bit on the draw weight. That being said, you can't hardly beat it for under $150. There are a lot of great used bows out there and you can pick one up for a steal if you shop around.

Only you can make the final decision as to what you really want!

Only you will really know whats right for you...aside from that the Samick sage is a fine shooter for the money and can get you flinging arrows fairly cheap. I think a lot of guys here have at least one sage on the rack or did at one time

A friend just picked up a new Sage and likes it a lot. It was a true 45#, but I thought it was heavy and clunky also...but the price is very fair.

If me, I would go for the Bear Grizzly or Kodiak Hunter from the late 60's or 70's and spend about the same as a Sage or bit more. They're great bows and you will not lose when you decide to move up.

Save the extra you would spend on a pricey custom bow and get some good arrows and other essentials (but stay away from the gadgets..LOL)

No experience with Sammick, but for $150.00 you could do alright on the auction site. I wouldn't drop a ton on a custom now. I'd start with something in the 40-45lb. range, and some matching arrows. If it's for you, there will be plenty of time to up-grade.

A vintage Bear, Wing, Pearson, Shakespeare, or Howatt will all shoot better than you can, better than a Sage, and will hold their value when you get hooked and decide to upgrade. You'll be surprised what $150 will buy you.

I bought a 50# @ 28" Samick Sage and a dozen arrows, a glove, and field points, and bow stringer for well under $300. I would have no issues hunting with it, it is a tough ugly bow. But it will shoot great.
