I am shooting a RD Stick Long 40# 62" 28@ brace height 7"5/8
And my doubts are I will need to avoid the shield by shooting into the hog armpit or if I get a good         arrow I can get a good penetration on hogs up to 160 pounds?

I would think we are probably at the bottom of the power range. I shot a 250# feral pig that had no appreciable shield with my 43# bow and a 500 grain arrow with a good, sharp 2-blade broadhead. The first arrow went through the lungs, but stopped in the far-side hide. The second arrow penetrated up to the fletching, with half the arrow hanging out on the far side and really opened up the heart. I THINK there would have been sufficient penetration even through a shield, but it would probably have been close and definitely would not have exited.

Pat B is probably the one who should be answering this - he slays pigs seems like every week.

I am currently shooting a Big Jim's buffalo at the same specs and the way it pushes an arrow I would say you will do well if you choose your shots wisely.

avoid the shield, i have had arrows go only to the back of the broadhead in a really thick shield and that was with a 60lb bow and 600 gr arrow and cut on contact head.. but i have shot through lesser shields as well, see terrys post at the top of pow wow for great examples.. but if your shooting smaller boars and sows or can place a arrow in the "pocket" you wont have that issue and should be fine

Use a heavy arrow for better penetration. 600 grains or more and a sharp 2 bladed head.

I used Carbon Express 150's with 200 gr two blade phantoms and I had pass throughs on a 150lb boar. The arrow weight was 520grs and the bow weight was 47lbs at 26" out of my palmer recurve.

I would think you pulling 28"'s would get the limbs working more than my short draw which helps a lot. I would use a sharp two blade broad head and front load a carbon with a brass insert.

My wife shoots 43# at 25" and it has driven a wensel woodsman up to the fletch on a hog the size you described with a 550 grain arrow. I would recommend a GT 15-35 or 35-55 or similar with a 300 grain tip and a tuffhead or grizzly head stropped sharp. I have never had any penetration issues on any hog with 600 grain plus arrows and bows above 57# (Most I have killed were with 73# and 77# hybrids)

The bow is 43@28, Arrow was pushing 600 gr. Shot was 15 yds and he went about 20 yds

Do you think I should put a gt byron ferguson heavy hunter320 spine @30 plus tuff head 300 grains or it would be too heavy?

That's my preference too, Mike.  

The lower the draw weight, the more important the over-all arrow design for a particular pursued quarry.

Low poundage 40# bows, with a properly designed and tuned arrow will blow through a hog.

There are a bunch of hunters shooting trad bows including selfbows that kill a ton of hogs with low 40s and short draw lengths.
You will be just fine!
Sharp heads and you are good to go.
