I drew a javalina tag for all units except 19, 23-28.  I will be able to hunt Jan3-10.  I was looking at the surrounding units.  22,16b, 21A, 21B.  If anyone has experience in the area and has any tips let me know.   Thanks and Merry Christmas.

16b is mostly wilderness...the 5 times I've been there I've seen no javelina ...the locals tell me they are at lower elevations during the fall than what I usually hunt at

Contact the D.N.R. or their equivalent in N.M. and ask to be directed to the regional office where the areas are, then to the wildlife biologist over the areas you are interested in. They will know as much and probably more about them than anyone you can talk to.

Area 16 is too high and too cold for javelina in January. The NMDGF probably won't be much help either.  The "boot heel" really isn't that much better than the rest of the southern part of the state anymore, since it is overrun with Border Patrol and illegals.  

There are some javelina at lower elavations all over, but they tend to be spread out in small groups.  Look for sign at lower elevatios near the edges of foothills. Don't waste time hunting them until you have found decent sign, then I would try to spot them from an elevated point.

If I were in your situation (going in "blind") I would probably focus on the Carlsbad area.  Good luck. - John

Been a while since I've been down there after them. Got into some around Deming/Lordsburg area. There was a real fat sucker hanging around by the gas station/Denny's at Lordsburg:) had good biscuits and gravy.  Also heard good things about hunting around the Gila River, just didn't have the time. Were a few other spots I was directed but will have to look them up.

I would definitely contact fish and game. I know I did, and hunted some private ranches because landowners wanted them gone. Some wanted trespass fees, but we just went down the phone number list until we found a free place. The ranches were northeast of Deming I believe.

Found some field notes: Florida Mountains, Animas Peak

We went to Animas and saw a couple had been skinned, saw sign but didn't get into any. Hunted a walnut?farm by Florida Mts. and saw sign, but old. Ran short on time, but there are Ibex in the Florida Mts that I wanted to spot. Hope this helps
