Beavertown, Pa. recently lost another of its "old school" archers of Shade Mtn. Bowman , when local archer Russ Goss passed. Russ was best remembered for a shot he made in 1961 at the clubs old field course's 65 yard target and upon retrival of his arrow discovered it had blood up on it..?? Upon further inspection of the target he realized a mouse had built a nest inside the target and his arrow hit the field mouse squarely through the head killing it instantly..!!! Russ never missed a beat as over the next month he told anyone who would listen of his shooting prowess and how he shot a field mouse in the head with his Sanders recurve bow.......at 65 yards...!!!!!  He never bothered to bore his audience with random details such as the pure luck nature of the shot..!!! A true feat of archery marksmanship.....lol..!!!! R.I.P. Russ.....make sure you check with Fred and Howard see if they improve

That's a great shot, and that's how most of us would tell the story, I'm sure he'll be missed.

All such losses bring back the ones most close to home.

Good of you to highlight Russ's tale and his passing.

Shade is loosing far too many of it's foundation members... Good thing you and others are there to carry on!

kill shot

Another adventure of a trad guy, I love it. Nice story.

Saw a similar shot at the old Kentucky Klassic several years ago.  A friend's kid (he's grown now) wanted to shoot a bow that belonged to a guy in our group.  The shot went WAY high, so we went to look for the arrow.  We finally found it in a log a long way behind the target...it had pinned a garter snake that was barely bigger than the diameter of the arrow.  He bragged about that shot for a while...think the kid was 11 or 12 at the time.

Men like your Dad and Russ built the road we now enjoy. It is right and FUN to pay tribute to them at every opportunity.
Thanks, John. A joyous Christmas to you and yours!

At the Arkansas ASA state shoot a friend of mine completely missed the target and when they found his arrow and pulled it out of the leaves, he had robin hooded another arrow that had missed the target.
