Thanks everyone for the kind words. I was using my samick sage 50# with arrow dynamics high plains hunters fixed with a 125 grain G5 montec broadhead. Penetration was about 8in just enough to blow both lungs. I've never been a trophy hunter so this was just some good old lucky deer hunting

That is an awesome buck!  Congrats are definitely in order.  What a way to start killing whitetail with a trad bow.  If that 8" of penetration starts to bother you, you might want to shy away from those montecs.  Not a fan of the penetration or the bloodtrail, but they sure got the job done on this bruiser!

Well I cant sleep so I will share my story now! Haha

I have been hunting as much as I can and I've been practicing as much as I can. This year for me has been a whole new adventure leaving the wheels and going to a recurve.

I get into the woods at about 245 this afternoon and start to set up on the ground in my usual spot. But for some reason i decided I didn't like it today so I moved to a spot I had never been. Found me a group of trees with lots of brush right behind me (whole area is really brushy),set up my bucket, nock and arrow, and lay my bow on my lap. I knew I had seen this giant here just before Thanksgiving but he was at 30yds during that encounter and I knew better than to take that shot. Fast forward in the hunt and I'm sitting there texting my wife about a new recurve I found for sale I want and I hear a twig snap. A single twig. I look right and there he is 7yds from me. He had come up a trail from a direction I didn't expect and he was getting a drink from a little pool of water. He sees me...started head bobbing at me.but then takes another drink. Once he lowers his head I bring up my bow and turn my body all at once. Sensing something is wrong, this guy stops drinking, and begins to try and get down wind of me making a circle around my position. He gets to about 16yds and he's at a slow walk, his head gets behind a tree and I come to draw. His head and body start to come out from behind the tree and he locks on me. I find my anchor pick the smallest spot on his giant body right behind his shoulder and loose the arrow....smack! Hit him right where I wanted to and he takes off full sprint with about 7in of my arrow dug in him!

I'm instantly overwhelmed with adrenaline and cannot believe what just happened. The whole encounter happened in maybe 2mins. I call my buddies and they show up ready to help me recover this deer. I had no blood trail for 75yds but I knew the direction he ran. We start to find blood, and good blood. Then my broken off arrow with lots of good blood. By this time we are about 100-200yds from where I shot him. I had called my wife to bring more flashlights and she had just pulled up on the road.my buddy's tell me just to go get the flashlights really quick from her so I do. I walk about 10yds from our last blood heading to the wife's car, around a thicket of tall grass, and there he is! I couldn't help but scream out in joy. And once I grabbed him by his rack i realized right then he was bigger than I thought and was a true stud! He's got 17 scoreable points! Main frame 12 with split brows and stickers coming off the bases. I feel truly blessed and I will never forget this hunt. Thanks to the landowners who let me hunt and the good friends that came at the drop of a hat to come help me track!
