What have you found to be the best way of removing a name from a bow?

Blackhawk

I've taped off the area around an unwanted name and lightly sand until removed.  I followed that up with 0000 steel wool and then apply my favorite Minwax Spar Urethane (satin or gloss).

After a few coats, I remove the surrounding tape and spray lightly to blend in.

If you're good, try writing your own name (or whatever) and then spray again.  You may want the pen ink to dry for a couple days or so before the final spray.

Others  may have better methods and I'd like to see it, but I've done this on a few I've owned and  they came out fine.

What about a scraper? Anybody ever use one?

Scraper?

Don't see that working too well. Most bowyers writing is under the finish, so you will have to do some sanding to get the writing off.

I would use some 600grit wet/dry sand paper and with a few drops of water lightly sand the name off. then spray area with some good quality spray can clear . A few light coats and blend out.

I've used a new razor blade and scraped it off works well.
The human body is the only machine the harder you work it, the stronger it gets.
"Aim small- Hit small" ( I never think negative)

If you ever decide to sell or trade it later on, I'd recommend the careful sanding process.    ;)

If not, then a dull pocket knife will scrape it off.

I would much prefer to have a bow with the factory finish and somebody else's name on it than to have a poor removal and hot patch refinish.

This is hands down the best do it yourself way to do it... You can use 220 or 320 grit paper and polish it out fine with 0000 steel wool. Mimwax spar, or even Helmsman spar varnish is a great choice...

I have used various scrapers for wood. Square edge, or single bevel are ones I prefer over a razor blade. Slow and easy, if it develops a burr or rough edge it will scratch. Sand with the grain. If your not use to a scraper sanding might be better as suggested above.
