Opinions on the best cold weather thermal type long johns ?
I am using Under Armour Cold Gear for my base but I need something really good over that.
Thanks for any input !

I like merino wool as a base the cabelas ecws polar weight over that. Was never impressed with anything from UA.

Under Armour is the best I've tried.  I have some cheaper heavy weight polypro stuff from Bass Pro that works well, too.  It's hard to pay the UA asking price, but it does work, in my opinion.

UA Cold Gear or the Endura Skin Heavyweight from BPS.   Then a layer of fleece over that if it drops down into the teens.

First Lite merino wool is great. I just switched to it this year after using all the other stuff and have finally found something that keeps me warm without having to add bulky layers. Its also washable so that is a plus.

For the cheaper end but was what my dad bought me when I started hunting and I have used it ever since but I like duo fold long underwear ...they do the job for me

WebFoot Body Sock. A modern day version of the Unionsuit, made with Polarfleece. I love mine.

A hunt based only on trophies taken falls far short of what the ultimate goal should be . . . time to commune with your inner soul as you share the outdoors with the birds, animals, and fish that live there.

I'll second the duo fold, poly on the inside and wool on the outside.

Merino wool as base and mid layer. Lots of good places to choose from: Sitka, Kuiu, Filson, Minus33, Smartwool, First Lite, etc, etc...

I always base with silk then layer wool or thick fleece for cold weather.  Then top off with Goretex.  Its breathable and impervious to wind, rain or snow.
I use to use UA Cold Geat, but couldn't get past the compression it provides.

Never question a man's choice in bows or the quality of an animal he kills.  He is the only one who has to be satisfied with either of those choices.

I really like Patagonia capeline underwear.  I have a couple tops and bottoms in the expedition weight... some of them I've had for 25+ years.  Their stuff is not cheap, but it does have an unconditional lifetime warranty, and in my experience seems to wick moisture away/dry faster than the merino base layers I have.

UA is over rated, you are paying the name. I have the underwear and a heavy sweatshirt and they are no better than using nothing in fact I think the underwear makes me colder because it is so tight.

For wool tops, lightweight merino wool sweaters from the thrift stores are pretty awesome, esp for the price.  Surplus mil polypro is very good, too.

X2 - absolutely the best clothing product I have purchased in many years.  This stuff is fantastic.

I have some older smartwool and it was nice stuff.  I tried some minus33 last year and was not impressed with it as much as my smartwool.
This year I picked up some firstlite( I like the ASAT camo) and boy do I like it. I got the lightweight. It feels alot like my smartwool but the thing thats real nice is the thumbhole cuffs. and if you don't use the thumbhole cuffs you don't notice anybulk in the cuff area.
