I started down the trad path with a few different recurves.

I wanted to shoot a very quiet bow. It was one of my driving wants to have a bow that could shoot so quiet the deer would never hear it. I just thought it seemed so cool.

With every recurve, I tried different limb pads. I tried velcro, peel and stick "felt" of different brands and thicknesses.
I even stuck on some of those tiny rubber mushroom shaped limb vibration dampeners positioned so they just touched the string after the shot.

Most ideas worked for a week to maybe a month. Then the pads were pressed down so they were hard and made noise. Or they wore through and made noise after the shot..and even worse after the felt was worn through the adhesive would stick to the string and make a "pop" sound right at the beginning of the draw.

The rubber deals worked for a while too...but they wore away too..and it was just ugly anyway.

SO...I switched to longbows..had enough of the constant tweaking needed by the recurves.

I've been shooting longbows since and lovin it.

Then I got the bright idea of making bows for myself.
I sold all my bows for materials and tools and went for it.

Had a lot of fun making them and shooting them.

This year though was rough..the couple bows that I had gave up the ghost..and I have no money for making another.

..I was outta bows!

A great friend of mine then lent me an old Bear grizzly recurve.

At that point I took the offer with much appreciation.
..though I was kinda bummed about having to deal with the limb noise again.

I tried my old ideas again..same results..worked for a while then got loud again.

Then I remembered about these Bow Hush things..that I honestly didn't think would work.

I figured for the cheap price I'd try it.
Ordered some and got them quickly.

Read the instructions for how to put em on..really very VERY simple.

After putting them on, I tried shooting the bow.

VERY quiet!.....like everything else after the first few shots.
...and bow hush even recommends unstringing your bow now and then for best results....I wasn't very hopeful for lasting performance with these.

So here I am...I put the bow hush on in July.
It's been a good 3 months....active shooting months with hunting practice etc.

I haven't unstrung the bow other than to adjust brace a couple times...and that hardly counts. And once for a few minutes to put on a "limbsation".

I haven't noticed a bit of change with them after 3 months.
They look and sound like new.
..I'm pretty sure they'll last as long as the string itself.

These bow hush things just plain work!..and work..and work...and work..

They work well enough that I'm not a secret "hater" of recurves anymore. They made my an equal opportunity shooter!..lol

Anyway..If you've had similar experiences with recurves and just want to quit, do yourself a favor and just try Bow Hush..you'll be surprised how well...and how LONG they work.

I use them on my recurve too and really like them.

oh..one more thing..
I have recently had a field trial with bow hush.

I shot this tender little guy at about 13 yds from the ground.
He was down a hill a bit and looking away standing still..wasn't the best shot placement..but it worked.

He didn't move till after the arrow sunk in.
Never even twitched.
..too me THAT was the REAL test.

Got sold on the em a long time ago, they work great!

Have them on 2 of my bow's. Work's great.

Gonna check these out... I use string leech's on my recurve and it's pretty quiet already

The bow hush is the "yarn" wrapped around the string where it rests on the limb.

...my bow has the hush puppies ( the puff balls ) on the string too.
..I used to use rubber whiskers for that too and found I really like the wool as well.

Can anyone offer a comparison between using Bow Hush versus a wool or acrylic yarn for a string wrap? (I know Bow Hush is wool as well, but it appears to be a less common kind of wool, so I'm hoping it also functions differently because in my experience with double-wrapping string ends with craft store 100% wool yarn of late, I've had little success in decreasing the sound on my recurves that were recently fitted with new strings.)

Yes, its New Zealand wool...it has more 'crimp' in it that acts like coil springs for more cushion, retention and durability, and for bow silencing, the crimp dispels more sound...kind of like baffles in a muffler.

We use the same wool we use in our carpets for that very same reason. And, we use what they call 'Top', the long fibers for better tensile strength, and less shedding.  We pay more for it because its the best, and it runs through our machines with less break outs unlike short staple wool.

Its also a thicker fiber, not really suitable for apparel or fabric in fine deniers.

All I'll ever use on my bows!! I used to use regular old yarn and until I tried BowHush I didn't know the difference. Out lasts yarn by a long long shot, and much more effective silencing a bow... Great product!!

HushPuppies and/or BowHush on ALL my bows! In my experience always outlasts the string. Good stuff.
