Never ever hunt the twin oak stand during WSW wind

Never, ever, ever. It is the most basic rule, the wind ALWAYS wins and I should know that.
Every stand I had out there today( except the twin oak) had someone within 50 yards of it. Depressed and feeling bad for myself, I plodded toward the twin oak. I know I should not sit there....but I have no stands left????

I'll just try it. I wont see anything anyway.

5:15 p.m. three nice does come in from the North, just like they always do.
Crap, they are gonna smell me. Here they come, they are GONNA smell me.
And at 30 yards, sure enough they did.
Dumb, dumb, dumb.   :banghead:

Its funny how well we can outsmart ourselves. Better luck next time Dave.

I hear ya Dave!  I have two small pieces of land to hunt.  Very few stands with me and my two boys.  I always take the crap stand with bad or questionable wind...havent seen much at all this year.  Hoping for some dumb luck.  Only other option is stay home or drive a few hours to big public land!

I just finished putting together a brushed-in ground blind for the WSW wind we usually get. Got out there this morning just before sun-up. No wind.

Sun comes up and so does a gentle east wind. A doe came in from the south and we saw each other at about the same time at 35 yards. She decided I was new, but apparently ok. Twenty five yards and still looking pretty good and still coming slowly. Then she hit my scent cone. Wow, deer sure can move fast!

No stands left?  How about a nice spot on the ground?  Better off to do that and have the right wind.  I used to think if I didn't have a tree stand in the right spot I just couldn't hunt but found out how nice (and effective) ground hunting can be.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

my best spot is set up for a WSW wind. I dont even think about it with anything that has east in it.
