I'm looking for some opinions on the thin but warm socks out there. My un-insulated early season boots don't have as much room for the thick socks that I have accumulated over the years.

Smartwool has a few hiking options that are fairly thin. I use mine with thin liners as they can get clammy if your boots aren't very breathable.

I was just going to suggest something from Smartwool...first socks that came to mind

DDave
I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

check into knee high merino wool skiing socks. Very warm, thin, and stay up when walking. Get at least 80% wool fo warmth........

Spot on.  Smart wool has a thin, almost crew sock thickness,  hiking sock. Pair that with a paper thin silk sock and you should have happy feet.

Thanks for the info gents.
I'll see if the hippy hiking and biking store down in Lawrence has any of those thin Smart wool socks. Those Darn Tough ones look good too but I'm going to need to try before I buy...

Those places usually carry them, I've bought them at a couple places like that.

I've heard good stuff about Darn Tough, have to check those out...

Smart Wool or go crazy and wear alpaca dress socks over thing nylon liner sock.

I've adopted too many bows that needed a good home.

Smartwool are nice socks but have no where as much durability as Darn Tough socks do.

Preston Lay

Been wearing Smartwool for several years and although I think their good, I now wear Darn Tough. They wear better and less hassle when trading in. I have lab dogs that put them to the test.

AkDan

I also do as Preston and and Sv.  Minus to lab dogs lol.

Recently picked up some thin darn toughs they're too warm to wear to work for me!   I have a bunch of dt's great socks!

One thing about dt's.  Don't believe the sizes!  I buy a size bigger.   The marked sizes are too tight ie cold feet.

When it's really cold I go to my smart wool Trekkers!   I've plum worn many pairs out.  Like said not as durable but still a great cold weather sock!
