G'day guys,

Well my 'new to me' Super Shrew Scout/ Lil' favourite has landed at my door and seeing as this is my first venture into owning any of the shrew line of bows I was a wondering what sort of string I should run on this bad boy?

The fella I bought it off tells me the one on the bow is a ten strand BCY D-10 string... Does this sound right guys? I'm sure it is but I'd hate to bust something simply on string material.

The loops seem to be padded also ( I normally do that when making strings myself ) and sorry to sound like a green horn but is D-10 like DF 97 in regards to strand numbers etc?

Cheers guys,

ak.

My understanding is the D10 was simply the 2010 version of D97 (1997)...good string material but pretty clear that BCY-X is better...read some of the posts by LBR...tough to get here in Canada but I love the one I got with my Blacktail Snakebit...Mike Mecredy uses D10, now called Force 10, on all the bows he sends out

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

I have some great ideas for you:  email Gregg Coffey at Java Man Archery.  He designed the Lil Favorite aka Java Man Helm's Deep.  Gregg currently sends his 40-50ish# bows out the door with an 8 strand D10 string.  You would be fine with D10, or if you want to try something else consider a 12 strand Rhino string from Allen at Lefties R Us or a BCY-X string from LBR at Champion.

Ditto....I'd check with Ron.  If no luck ask Chuck at two tracks or Gregg at javaman.  They will help.

Al,

That bow probably went out with a. 6 strand 450+ string, and two add'l strands of B50, plus padded loops.

But, any high performance string with padded loops will be fine.

I had a 10 strand D10 on a Selway/Ceentaur I recently sold. Extremely smooth and quiet string, no creep to speak of. Wouldn't hesitate to put one on my Javaman Falcon.

Dynaflight '10 is a slightly higher grade of Dyneema than Dynaflight '97.  It's SK78 Dyneema vs. SK75 Dyneema.  To get a comparison, original FF is SK65 Dyneema, 8190 is SK90 Dyneema.

450+ was (is?) the standard string material for Shrew bows for years.  450+ is 70% SK75 Dyneema and 30% Vectran.

My personal choice would be BCY-X.  It's a second generation improvement over 450+ (452X was the first improvement over 450+, which was an improvement over 450 Premium).

BCY-X is 83% SK90 Dyneema with 17% Vectran.  Very stable, even in high temps.  Very durable, very quiet, very consistent.  Best string material I've ever used, bar none.

I'm not a fan of fat strings, but I don't like "skinny" either.  X is a very small diameter material.  20 strands is going to be similar to 10-12 strands of Dynaflight '97.  I like 18-20 in the string, 24 in the loops (padded out with B-55).

So far I've heard nothing but great reviews on the X, and I have nothing but good to report from my own experiences.

Good info above!
Chad, how far out are you on strings?
Plant a fruit or nut tree today, and have good hunting tomorrow.

At the moment...a week or two.  Subject to change at any time.  I'll be out of town for a few days the third weekend in Sep, but other than that I don't have any more trips planned this year.

Thanks guys for all the info...

I have some homework to be doing, of the good kind.

Cheers,

Yeah, check with Ron La Clair. He seems to know a little bit about Shrews.
