Hey guys, I've just started making my own arrows and am looking to crown dip them.  I don't really need a whole can of paint for just a few arrows.  Just wondering if I can use most acrylic paints for this or does it need to be a specific kind.  Thanks for any tips.   AJ

I've used Krylon spray paint of a few. Just tape off the arrow and spray.

Also dipped in Acrylic/latex/water base.

Some carbons need cleaned HARD...I've had them scrubbed with alcohol and #0000 steel wool and as the dip drains off, a bubble would show.  

Another guy had the same thing..Go figure...

What Pat said.  If you're only going to do a few it's probably easiest to spray paint them.  You can make a dip tube out of copper or pvc pipe.  If you use a small diameter it doesn't take much paint.  The level in the tube drops drastically with each dip so you'll need to add paint often.  Most dip tube have a large diameter reservoir at the top so you can dip a lot of arrows without needing to fill the tube often, but for only a few arrows I'd just make a straight tube and fill as necessary.  Be sure your cresting paint is compatible with the dipping paint.  Basically, don't put lacquer over anything but lacquer.  It'll eat up most paints.  Conversely, with lacquer on first, you can crest with almost anything, including markers.

I use Rustoleum  spray paint on my wood arrows. I just tape them and use lots of very thin coats.

I agree with the spray paint method for a one time or a few shafts. I also use the Rustoleum for this. I had some left that I used on a steel screen door. The shafts came out real good for me. I used Ducco for fletching. Both the paint and glue can be had at the home stores which is very handy.

thanks for the info guys.  I got some waterbase acrylic paint at a craft store today and used an eco dipper to do the crown dip.  They turned out pretty decent....had a small smudge on 2 of them.  I'm going to put a coat of sealer on now.  not sure how they'll turn out in the end but I'm having fun trying!!

I use white lacquer spray paint.
