.....but he can still whip me in a shoot off! Greg Nicolau and I met Ron at the Elm Hall shoot today. Ron is temporarily deaf as a stump, was walking with a cane to combat some vertigo, and was shooting  an old Grimes Chief aluminum riser bow that he just picked up yesterday.

I have to admit, I was trying like heck to beat him (and so was Greg), and I couldn't get it done. That old curmudgen can still talk smack and shoot with the best of them!

Thanks for a good shoot Ron!! I WILL beat you next weekend....   :bigsmyl:

What a treat!  I would be happy to just watch Ron shoot in person let alone shoot with him.  What a great way to spend a Saturday!

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

Dang, sorry I missed Greg's call last night. I would've loved to have shown you boys a thing or two about shooting.  Ron called me tonight Roger and said he was enjoying a victory drink of Woodford Reserve Double Oak bourbon.

He also said you don't have to be a young good looking eye batting female to get out of a speeding ticket -------you just have to have a NorthernMist longbow on the back seat and a trooper going to the same shoot the next day.

Ron has always been one of my heros, and even though I don't know him personally I know he is a great guy and a class act in promoting our great sport. Keep it up Ron.

The bow he was shooting yesterday was 45#......but that's just the bow he bartered for at the shoot. I honestly don't know Ron's hunting weight. I do know that in his younger days he pulled some very stout bows. If I'm not mistaken, he had a 100# Howard Hill longbow.

I did catch a break from a very nice deputy. He shoots a recurve, and his Dad shoots a longbow. I made him laugh when he asked about the mosquitoes at the shoot, and I said "Well, we doped up pretty good before we went out". That was probably the first time someone used that terminology during his work day, and didn't go to jail (obviously I was talking about bug dope   :p )

I talked with Ron and he helped me get an arrow fixed after I had to pull it out of a tree. Seems to me he did mention (several times) that he did whip some serious butt   :)

Ron is hunting with bows between 40 and 50 pounds now. I believe the 1959 Kodiak reintroduction bow he just got is 45#.

Yep...my big mistake was making a near perfect shot, and saying "You can't beat that". He said something about the horse I rode in on and center punched that little IBO circle.    :scared:    :scared:

I found out, one day at the first Compton's rendezvous, DON"T TALK TRASH. Especially if you are beating him(or keeping up). One itsy bitsy comment and you've had it.

Ron is about 60 grit with a 400 finish.
Gotta respect that.
