Sights

I shot a 3 pin sight on my recurve. 20,25,30 yard pins. I can shoot without them, but I like them. Anyone else shoot sights besides me?

Kind of ruins it for me, if I wanted sights I would have stayed with my wheel bow.

I shoot my recurve with or without sights. Lots of guys shoot sights with trad bows. They've been around a long time.

I shoot with sights occasionally to spice things up and enjoy faster aiming. You will probably get a bunch of responses that don't realize that not that long ago shooting with sights was the norm and many compound archers also shoot without sights even today.
The big issue is lots of modern bows have such a short sight window that it can make gear selection difficult. Otherwise I think more people would shoot and enjoy them

I have every intention of setting my Hoyt up with a sight...does not matter in the least to me what anyone else will call it...I call it a way to be more consistent at longer ranges

I know sights are used on recurves, I had pins on my Kodiak Hunter back in the 70's. Just saying it would ruin the traditional experience for me now.

I go back and forth with sights. Finally found a consistent way to gap shoot and have been sticking with it. But in the past I have put tape on my riser to help me adjust for distance, I have made a single pin sight with a feather quil, I have taped matches on the riser... all in the pursuit of better accuracy and cleaner kills.

Mr. Bear had a site on his bow many years ago. There is a photo of him with the site.

The younger folks on here may not like them but back in the 50's and 60's there were almost as many site shooters as there were instinctive shooters.

I went to hundreds of tournaments back them and saw first hand.

My uncle was one of the top ten site shooters around placing in the top 10 at Watkins Glen at the nationals.

If you can shoot better with a site, go for it as that is what it is all about.

I seem to remember the IBO had a recurve aided class back in the 1980's.

I use am SRF sight on my recurve. It is a good feeling to hit a bit better.

I go back and forth with a single pin on one of my longbows. I'm way more accurate and consistent with it.

Sure they do. I'm against a lot of high tech shooting aids that take away the archer's motivation to maintain and improve his/her skills. I don't put the unlit sight pin in that category. When I left the compound in the middle 70s, the first thing I did was drill a brand new Jack Howard Gamemaster Jet for a sight! For some years I used a single -or sometimes 2-sight pins. I don't use a sight now, but I make no judgement about those who do.

Not to me....

I had a compound with pins and a peep that got me started. Owen Jeffery told me that I'd be able to kill more deer if I could shoot without pins. I didn't listen and after a season of being able to see the deer but not through my peep or pins (before truglo stuff) I understood what Owen ment and have been shooting instinctively ever since.

Instinctive works for me. Shoot whatever way works for you and don't worry with other people's opinion.

When I had target bows, I had sights on my BW hunting bow. The problem for me came when taking off position shots, when I needed to cant the bow to get limb clearance, steep up hill shots, steep downward shots, and shots that required faster shooting. Emulating Hill changed all that for me, now those shots are par for the course and limb clearance seldom is an issue.

For me it comes down to this. Shooting with a sight is much more similar to shoot a rifle which is testing my marksmanship (my ability to hold a pin, a crosshair, etc., on a target). This is fun, but shooting instinctively is more enjoyable.

I equate instinctive shooting to shooting a basketball. You practice your form to get consistent, and then it's just testing.... my instincts. Shooting baskets is fun, and shooting a bow instinctively is fun.
