Hidy Guys n Ma'ams!, im Rodney im new to the forum and to longbows ive been an archer for over twenty years compound and recurves for me it was all archery if i was treestand hunting i had my compound n if i was stalking or small game r bird hunting i carried my recurve . I always wanted to move to a longbow but well to be honest i guess i grew a fear of it ive taken many many hogs n small game with my recurves but when it came to deer even at ten yrds id always miss mostly they wud jump my string so i wid always fall back n stick with my compound . But i truly enjoy just shooting traditional and i want to build the confidence in trad hunting for whitetail that i do with my compound . I spent 2400$ on a new mathews heliM set up last yr ive enjoyed it but my real joy is traditional i probly wont sell my compound ive never sold any of my bows . But i am looking for and new longbow to hopefully start a new long relationship with  but i need some advice on wut and where to buy my bow n best way to set it up . I have a 26.5-27" draw i like a 55# bow n i like the shorter bows like a 58" n i like the reflex deflex bows  i like a slinder more less straight looking grip as opposed to the contoured newer shaped grips i want a good hard hitting bow it doesnt have to be a rocket  wether i need to shoot cedar bamboo r carbon shafts im open to all n great for any and all advice for different bowyers and where to start

First of all, welcom th the Gang!

As far as longbows go, take a look at Sarrels Archery. His Blueridge takedown longbow is my goto bow. He is also (almost) right in your back yard! Well, maybe not that close, but a short couple hr drive and you can be at Bob's shop in Manchaca, trying every different model he makes!

Oh yeah, he is a sponsor here too!

Welcome!  You sound like you're on the right path.
Based on the type of bow you described some great bow choices for you would be a Javaman Elkheart (he can build the grip without a thumbrest) OR Shrew Classic Hunter, a Big Jim Thunderchild, a Toelke Whip HS, Stewart Slammer Special or Lil Slammer, a Cari-bow Wolverine, or a Centaur with a low wrist grip to your specs.  Those bows would put a grin on your face and the craftsmanship is impeccable.  The TG classifieds are a great resource for used versions of the above named bows and you can also find them other places on the net.  Order them new an you will be treated right by the bowyers as well.  I just named a few of my top picks.  There are so many great choices out there, as the other guys have already named a few.  Consider Sarrels for sure, you're lucky to be near them and could even discuss a bow build in person!  Have fun!

If you are looking for something short and sweet with high performance, with a grip shaped to your hand at any wrist angle you like.... i invite you to check out The 58" Sasquatch hybrid long bow, or possibly the Flatliner in a 62" model if you prefer a more D shape to it.

Why go through the hassle of buying and selling bows until you find the one that fits you, when you could have something custom built to fit you like a glove....  Kirk

Become a contributing member and troll the classifieds there's ton of great bows for sale at good prices.

Carbon is great for learning to shoot with because they won't bend and you don't have to worry if that flyer was you or the arrow. But as you progress there is nothing like a longbow and wood arrows.

For your shooting woes take a look at masters of the barebow DVDs and jimmy Blackmons YouTube channel

Kirk is a class act as well.  He builds some sweet shooting bows!

As for the Stewart you mentioned,

Don't hesitate to give Leon a call- as friendly as they get and is too modest for his own good...his bows are 100% functional art, and if you ever shoot one you'll realize they were born to hunt.  One of my top picks ever and I'm not alone.  I actually have a Lil Slammer arriving this week after a wait that wasn't easy, the anticipation has been killing me.  I am planning on posting a mess of high quality pics when it arrives.  Also own a Slammer Special and used to own a 3pc as well.  Stewart fan boy right there   :D

If at all possible, try before you buy - longbows are such a personal thing... that said, you can not POSSIBLY go wrong with a Stewart Slammer - fantastic bow. Bigfoot and Centaur are also two of the highest performance longbows out there. Then there is Eaglewing...
We are all here because we are not all there.

Welcome.  I'm not going to recommend a bow but there are a lot of great options from sponsors and classifieds here.
Relax,

You'll live longer!
