I am thinking about hunting from the ground mostly this year and would like to see pictures and short description of hunt equip , yardage , etc.
Darren Webb   If it bleeds we can kill it !

I was good here sitting down,  Had deer within 13 yards and a missed shot at a coyote at 8 steps but once I stood up, the jig was up and the young buck picked me off.

I had deer and a  bobcat at 3 yards here

I was wearing a guille suit

the trick is to stay still, hide your outline especially head and shoulders.

I like my shooting lanes close and I prefer to build ground blinds that only have shooting holes through them.

Bad Hiding spot

Not terrible minus the blue.

Plus its more important to have cover behind you than in front of you.

Resulted in a beautiful heart/lung shot on a maple at 8 yards...     :knothead:

Im definatley thinking of opting for ground this year.
I have a ladder stand , but Im not real comfortable in the tree, and the shot/draw angle is never the greatest.
Also I have had shots (missed) at more deer from ground than trees.
The killer is scent and thermals.
But this year Im trying wood smoke as a cover scent.
You really feel like a hunter on the ground (or at least I do)

The pleasure I get from keeping  my feet on the ground is beyond words for me. It is just where I have to be. The things I see, hear, and smell are what keep me going.

I like "simple", and the ground lets me keep it at that........

monkeyball

Hard to notice this if your up in a tree......

If it was good enough for Fred, it's good enough for me........

Cyclic-River, that picture of you with your pipe is great! I wonder if the smoke acts as a scent blocker? My wife bought me a Former pipe for my birthday last year--one of my most prized possessions!

But for hunting, a bent stem would be ideal like yours. Got me thinking about this...

Cyclic-Rivers

Chupa,

I break the Pipe out when I am taking a break from hunting.  Often I like to remember loved ones lost and send my prayers to them up in smoke.

Also I like to reflect on those less fortunate and take in the grandeur of the moment/situation.  That was an Elk hunt, mid day.

Not to steal the thread too much but here is one in SC on  a hog hunt

You can see how exposed one is without any back cover.   ;)

Pipe smoking is a very contemplative activity for me as well. I'm actually considering to give ground hunting a shot this year. Heard a tip of using a turkey diaphragm call to purr while moving through the woods to (maybe?) fool some deer...    :dunno:  won't know unless you try though I guess haha
