Was out in the country walking around the woods and stump shooting with my recurve. When I came out and walking back to the truck I heard this. It`s coming from right were I was. I was using my action cam so the sound sounds like it is further away than it was. About 30yds. I am surrounded by 3000 acres so I fired into the ground to say good by to it. :D

Nope.  You scared away a Red fox. It could probably smell you and was barking/howling at you. Fox are raising their young right now so they're pretty active throughout the day trying to find food.

Inquisitive:  Why the piece while stump shooting?

Thumper Dunker

Big coyote that's pissed off. Telling the world where your at and to stay away.  Well big like in 35-40 lbs   most likely the top male in the area.
Not no fox. Pretty cool stuff.
You can hop but you can't hide.
If it was not for rabbits I would never get a buck.
Yip yipahooooo yipyipyip.

I was out in the middle of no where by myself. I always pack. Why because I can. There are some wild dogs also in this area and some poachers. Pretty remote area. And if that was a fox that was a big one.lol

Yea that`s what I figured.Pretty deep voice that`s what made me wonder. It was there a long time and I could hear it walk in the woods. Just shortened up the vid. Thanks

Hmmm.  Sounds just like the Red Fox that barks at my dog every morning. (An urban fox.  I can see him when he's doing it.)  Sounds just like a half-dozen foxes I've seen/heard in the wild as well.   Could be a coyote, but they're usually higher pitched. Fox are usually pretty quiet and a lot of folks don't know that they can also get quite loud.  That being said, I know Thumper Dunker knows coyotes. They can sound a lot alike. Maybe some others who have heard both will weigh in.  To me, it sounds more like the foxes I've heard than the coyotes I've heard.     :dunno:

I think it is a coydog. I have listened to thousands of coyotes and never heard that gravvley sounding voice. It could be a coyote but I have never heard one like that.

God bless, Steve

Just a regular old coyote. Sounds like a raspy  male giving you the ol' threat bark.

That place is loaded with yotes. hear them all the time hunting and fishing and camping down there. Just that deep voice threw me. Need to thin them out.

Yep, just a coyote challenging you does not sound like a red fox.

That's a coyote challenge howl. Heard it many times and have used it .

Bill Turner

I heard two sounds. One sounded like a coyote howling in the distance. The other was a higher sounding screech that seemed to be quite a bit closer. Is this the sound your referring to? If so, I'm not sure what it is but it could be a red fox.   :banghead:

Dave h - Others can give more expert opinions about what was there. I also pack a pistol[conceal carry]  whenever going into the woods. Even working in yards[landscaping] in wooded areas. We have bear, coyote, ferrel dogs, and a lot of rabies incidents in the mountains of Virginia. Just a little insurance to give myself an edge if something happens. Thanks, Roy
Maybe it is time to shoot what I have on the rack
