I purchased a spray can on Rustoleum 2X. It really is nice paint and very quickly makes a quality gloss cap "dip". I crested over it with True North Acrylic cresting paints. Looks great, drys quick, seems super durable.
I have one arrow fletched with SteelForce Beyond Bond instant glue and one fletched with Fletchtight Platnum. Both seem to be sticking well.
My only question - Does anyone know what kind of paint the Rustoleum 2x is? I can't find that anywhere. What glues and paints should be compatible? I don't want the feathers to fall of someday.
There are a lot of nice color choices with the 2X. I got the orange and it is an exact match to Truflight orange feathers.
I haven't had good luck with the marketed acrylic dip paints and tubes. Can't get it to stick no matter how I prepare the shaft. Done with that. Spray paint is too easy.

I looked that up not long ago...  if I remember it's an acrylic base.

It's always best not to mix finishes (lacquer, acrylic, poly, etc) as they have different properties and can react with each other, BUT this is more a noticeable concern with furniture.  On arrows, I don't think it's a big concern.

I use fletch tape, and I've had the same experience with acrylics and not good adhesion.  Seems to be best with lacquer or poly.  I painted some kids arrows with acrylic paints a couple weeks ago and then wiped on lacquer.  Feathers are sticking great, and so far I don't have "finish" issues.

I am waiting for an answer from Rustoleum as to the base of the paint. I told them what we want to do ( glue feathers) to arrows. Maybe knowing if the paint is a Laq. Or oil or water or ? What ever base we can figure out what glue will work.
I have used this product on a steel framed screen door and it impressed me as well. Almost like an enamel finish on a kitchen appliance.

Idaho, I would have guessed it was more likely to be a chemical base of some kind. Touching it when it wasn't quite dry reminded me of lacquer. Don't ask me what that feels like.

I lost an arrow in the grass last night in the grass. We had rain overnight. I found it this evening. The paint and glue look real good. I don't even think it needed re-fletched. I'm tempted to pull on the feathers to see how strong they are held.

If clean up is with thinner, spirits, etc. then it's oil and/or solvent based.  Water clean up?, then water based.

I still waiting on RO to answer my email. But I see the above post tells us we use min sprits for clean up. I wonder then if Ducco would work? Seems that is the glue we used for enamel paint for wood arrows.
I have used a Krylon  product similar to the RO product. I used NVP glue for fletching. So far no complaints form my friend.

RO got back to me today. The paint is an oil based resin. I am holding off painting till it cools down here. It is 104 outside now. I do not want to take a chance on the paint "orange peeling" .

Cant go wrong with NVP Fletching Glue Partner! I have yet to have any trouble with that on Any Arrow Finish!! (As much as I plug these folks, you think they might pay me advertising? LOL)

X2 Shakes.602, NPV has become my go to glue.

You need to seal the cap and crest before fletching. I put two to three coats of Wipe On Poly, let dry well and then fletch arrows. You can use tape or I use Saunders NPV. Sticks well. If you don't seal them the cap and crest will take a beating and scrape off easily.

Think you will need to go with a water base as an overcoat because of the spray paint.  Regular wipe on poly may not be compatible.

I have been using boning fletchtight platinum with no problems at alls... so far but have not tested it in extremes.
Make sure the cap is dry. I have 3 different colors of 2x spray paint. It all covers very well. Especially the white. 1 coat does it!

I tried the instant goat tuff type glue also. I think that is ok also if the cap paint is completely dry. But I knocked some of those loose when impacted with another arrow.

for clean up it reads mineral spirits or Xylol. It also recommends using American Accents primer for superior adhesion.

I haven't had any problems using wipe on poly over the Rustoleum.

Me neither. I use Krylon Fusion too with great success. Caps last forever. Wipe on Poly works fine and I fletch with either tape or Saunders NPV.

What do you clean carbon shafts with before spraying? Mineral spirits or alcohol?
