Wood guys, what is my best option for woodies if I want a finished shaft weighing around 525 or so? Shaft would be 30.5 bop 53lb @ 29 draw bow. I would like an 11/32 shaft with 10 inch nock taper to 5/16 with 150-175 gr broadhead I'm guessing a 60-65 spine shaft will fly true. Bow is cut to center.

I'm no expert but with a shaft that long and head that heavy I'm guessing your going to need more spine then that.

Here is a general expected weight from Surewoods shafts website.  Looks like they would work for you.  If you are talking broadhead weight included in your target weight.

Your choice sounds to me like it should work--it would work for me at least.

I'm not so sure. I made up some 50-55 spined Surewoods, 30.5" with 125 gr field points and they fly great bareshaft from my 46# longbow that is center cut.

I made up some 55-60 30" shafts with 160 gr points and they fly very weak. I don't want to cut them shorter, so I'm thinking I may have to go to 60-65 around 30.5" to be able to shoot the 160 or 175 gr points.

The 4-arrow test kits are definitely fun to play around with.

Longbow or recurve?  At same draw weight, I believe a recurve typically likes slightly higher spine than longbow (especially if longbow is straight-limbed, not reflex-deflex).

Does your desired finished shaft weight of 525 gr exclude or include the broadhead weight?  If it's shaft w/o broadhead, you may need to go with a 23/64 tapered shaft to get the shaft weight you're looking for.

I've been shooting 60-65 spine 23/64 tapered cedar shafts that I got from Wapiti Archery a couple of years ago (with 125 gr field points), and they fly nicely out of my HHA 50#@28" Big 5 longbow.  My draw is longer- probably 29.5" with a Hill-style longbow, so right about where you are (53#@29").  Since you're using heavier broadheads, I'm guessing you may want to try 65-70 spine.

PM Surewood Steve...I just ordered some shafts from him. Steve did a great job on the first dz for my 52# Fedora recurve. Told Steve what I was looking for in finished wt and that's what I got.

Now, just ordered shafts for my longbow and he sent me a list of the wts available in my spine. Exactly what I wanted to see....and his Doug Fir are top notch.

Jk I'm looking at that weight w/broad head so total would be around that 525gr. Kind of wanting to use the arrows for hunting and 3d. If I keep right around 10 gpp at my draw I have a bow that will shoot 190 fps and then I can shoot the same arrows all the time and not have to worry about a different sight picture for different arrows.

I will pm Steve and see what my options are.

I shoot almost the exact specs 51@28 drawn 29. I do shoot skinny strings and that seems to make a big difference. I shoot 75-80 with 125 gr point or 80-85 with 145.

Call Surewood Steve. He'll get you at the weight you want.

You may need something closer to 70-75.  Test packs are definitely worth it.

Most DF is going to come out heavier than you want with that point weight.  I'd suggest tapered POC or have your vendor hunt down some DF that is unusually light.
