All I used to shoot was wood shafts.....started out with chundoo and then switched to ash for many years. But alas, was having a hard time finding good quality wood shafts, so I went over to the dark side with carbons for a while. I never really felt right shooting carbons........yes, they are strong, and for sure, they are accurate, but something about them still rubbed me the wrong way.
Then after some research on here I wanted to try some Surewoods, having heard that the quality was really good. I decided to contact Snag to get some shafts done right. Boy, am I glad I did! These were sealed, stained and crested by David of Wilderness Custom Arrows, and fletched by myself(I like to burn my own feathers).......here`re the first dozen, the others still await fletching.
Can`t wait to send one of these thru a big black bear this spring, and hopefully a mountain goat in august.
Thanks Snag for making my re-entry into wood arrows awesome!

I have switched entirely over to Surewood Douglas fir.

Went roving today and took two dozen stump shots with a D.fir shaft using an Ace Hex blunt.  Came home with the same arrow undamaged.  Cedars I would have snapped two under similar conditions.

D.Ellis those are great looking arrows.

I'm another who shoots only wood arrows.
I use Split Hex shafts & they are fantastic.
I have some older POCs too, but they are dwindling.

D.Ellis are those bright feathers in your first picture easy to follow in the air in low light?
They look like they'd be easy to see. When you get your bear & goat I'm sure we'd all like to hear about it.

Frank V,
The pink feathers are for visibility, yes. Easy to see in flight, easy to see where you hit, and easy to find if you m.....m....mmmmmm...miss!   :D
Thanks,

Thanks D.Ellis, I'm needing to order some feathers & am looking at colors. For years I used white, but white can be alarming to Whitetails.

I have thought of pink, too & it's looking attractive!  We never miss!     :scared:   sometimes our target jumps out of the way?    ;)

That is a nice burn on those feathers. I have a question.
How far above the featrhers & shaft do you set your burning ribbon?
I must have mine a bit close as I'm getting a slight blackening on the feather front & back. I may need to back my ribbon off a bit?
Thanks.

Looking good Darcy! Sure hope you get to put them to good use in the high country.

Thanks Snag. Bears first, but I definitely hope to do the goat trip this year.
I was shooting one of these today, trying to tune to my new bow. Think I have it nailed down now. They seem to recover from paradox quicker than the ash arrows I have shot. Just a perfect ball of feathers all the way to the target, no wobble or anything. Even when my release is less clean than it should be, they still fly great.

Frank, I just set it as close as possible without scorching the shaft, close enough that it does scorch the quill a bit, but I always trim the front end of the quill to a smooth taper anyway.

Nice looking arrows. I just recently bought a dozen df shafts from Steve, this will be my first set of woodies.

Thanks Darcy, I think I'm going to have to raise my ribbon just a bit.

I just built some D. firs I really like how they fly and they hold up better then the cedars I started with did. I wish I would have ordered them from Steve. I will be sure to order from surewood on my next set.

Got 3 dozen wood shafts on the way...just doesn't feel right shooting a carbon out of my Hill bow...suspect when my Northern Mist Shelton gets here in a couple of months I'll likely feel the same way. It's been a few years since I made any but I'm definitely looking forward to making'em beautiful    :archer:

I'm thinking about switching back to wood partly so I can shoot longbow class at local 3D tournaments. I also want to just because, well.... it's wood arrows!
