First try at dyeing feathers, learned a lot, not very difficult.

Both are great but I just love those yellows...What method did you do if you don't mind me asking?

dhermon85

Cool, look great. I also dig the yellows.

katman

Thanks guys. Keefer,I used Veniard dyes, Yellow and Pink Fluorescent. Followed there included instructions, heat water to simmer add dye stir well, add vinegar then feathers and keep them moving with water at simmer. Length of time determines tone. Yellow took about 3 times longer than the pink.

Next time I will cut back on the pink pigment a little and shorten time to lighten it up. Very satisfied with the yellow.

Thanks Drew, pretty cold up there eh? sure is down here.

Forgot to add in instructions to de-oil feathers by swishing in warm water and couple drops of dawn then rinse.

Second try at pink, diluted mixture and cut soak time way down to 15-20 seconds, much better. Now to fletch some up and see how they look in flight.    :archer2:

Very cool. I have been looking at the Venaird Dye's for a while, just haven't tried them yet.
Thanks for posting your experience with it.

I've been using them with great success also. Seems like I bought it from a dealer in Canada. Here is their site....http://www.veniard.com/contact.asp

are you starting with naturally barred feathers?  May i ask if it is "worth" it to do this yourself?(aside from self accomplishment)

I am wanting to try to process my own feathers due to the cost of feathers.  I find it unreal that it cost $20 for enough feathers for a dozen arrows.
