So I realize that to gain access to the classifieds I need to become a contributing member; and I will in about 6 weeks after i've caught up on some bills - for now, I'm wondering if anyone is either selling, or knows where to get a decent 30-40 lbs practice recurve for bettering my form.

I've checked craigslist, nothing.

also checked KSL (the local classifieds ad here in utah county) - only recurves at the moment are over $200.

I'm not looking for anything to target practice with, hunt etc - already have a nice $600 bear archery for that  

I just want to get my hands on a bow for practicing my draw, release and follow through.

if anyone has a old bow around that draw weight and would like to donate/sell on the cheap let me know please, heading to idaho on the 1st of feb (from provo ut) - so if by some miracle you live somewhere between those, success! haha

Why not    build a form master  and develop your form with the bow you have?  The attached links don't have pics but I'm sure we could come up with something if you need some.

What is a "Practive" bow anyway?

sorry Kirk i forgot to mention in my first post - so my main bow (and only bow at the moment) is a 60# draw.  so performing the desired 200+ "repetitions" a day that i would like for burning correct form into my muscle memory isn't doable on 60#'s, this a practice bow with 40-50% less draw weight would help a lot.

Hey you made a pretty cool pvc quiver, google it and make yourself a PVC bow, cost less than 10$ and should work great.
I like that form master, but I guess you will still be drawing the 60  pound bow.

yeah I'm short of any sewing supplies (and skill) at the moment     but I'm considering buying one from 3 rivers.  would be great to have a form master to make sure i'm using correct tension for the draw on my 60#, also to see at what point i'm fatiguing.

as for the PVC bow, my dad and brother made some to use over christmas - I just don't have the patience for something like that :/  (odd.. i know, seeing as how it's been 2-3 weeks form start to finish on this quiver, got lazy after the initial molding/cut)

There are some wonderful 40# bows that come up in the classifieds.  Damon Howatt Catalinas, Eldorados and Venturas.

Check out rmsgear.com.  They have several bows in that range for less than $200.  I know I saw a 35# Bear Black Bear for $125 and a pretty nice looking 42# Kodiak for $175.  Those would probably both give you a grip similar to your hunting bow, depending on what model it is.  I have a 35# Black Bear and a 70# Super Kodiak and the grips feel almost identical.  The grips on my Red Wing Hunter and my Ben Pearson Hunter feel much different.  Just another factor to consider.  If you could afford the extra $50, I'd go with the Kodiak.  I can tell you from my experience that the 35# Black Bear is not a very high performance bow.  Shoots good, just not very powerful being one of Bear's lower end bows.  The 42# Kodiak, on the other hand, would be very pleasant to shoot but would also have plenty of performance for hunting should you so desire.

If you just want reps, I once built a simple lifting device that got me pulling to around 120# at 16 years old. At that time I needed compound pulling practice. Machine long gone, so crude drawing all i can provide. Used cement blocks, firewood and whatever for weight. So I made this.

It did work, worked well. For a kid that spent every buck on archery gear. I went from a 40# or so youth compound right into a 65-80# High Country Sniper. Shot that bow at 78# around 400 arrows a day after school.

i'll give that some serious thought tonight at work.  

If you got a welder, you can make it adjustable out of cheap steel square tube. Nice thing about this setup is you can change the weight. In my drawing I depicted a short lever that would be close to vertical at full draw, thus giving let off like a compound. For trad bow you need longer lever arm or none at all for no let off.

just realized what you're describing (with no lever arm) is the cable flye machine at my local 24 hour fitness gym - it's what got my back from struggling with my 60# draw to where now my release is smooth and i can properly post shot anchor
