It will be my first pig hunt. I will be taking my Wild Horse Creek Hawk (mild r/d) 55@28 and maybe my GN hunter t/d 65@28 as backup. Arrows are gt 5575 tipped with VPA terminator 250s and snuffers beefed to 225. Arrows come in at around 630-650. What do the hog experts think?

I live in San Antonio tx and have seen and shot a few hogs to say the least that should be quite adequate. Just be mindful they have a plate like armour as they call it tight on the shoulder so hit the just behind that or get em quartering away a little and you will have some bacon good luck it will be fun

I have done a bit of hog killing, not as much as cy14561 but I have noticed, don't hit high as you might get lungs but wont leave blood and can go for a good ways, don't shoot back at all as your arrow will come out green, there lungs are compressed forward, been there done that as to both scenarios.  right in the armpit will do the trick but good risk of hitting the leg bone. personaly if broadside I think your setup will penetrate the shield and stop on the other side.  my aimpoint is two or three inches above the elbow.  I have done some tests on big boars I can get through the shield and a rib. sometimes it is sticking out the off side. I could not get through the shield and shoulder. im shooting 62lbs 580gr ad tipped with a woodsman elite

Thanks guys. I figured I was good to hunt! I know shot placement and sharp broadheads are key. I'm pretty excited, almost forgot about deer season.....almost.

At the top of this forum Terry has put a lot of great info on shot placement for hogs.

Don't worry about the shield, shoot right thru it. Every hog that i shot there was no way to avoid hitting the shield since it extended almost to the hams. Your set up will be more than adequate for any hog.

Take a good bow mounted light for night hunting (if legal). Thats how to get the bigguns!

Sounds great.  If you will be hunting from a stationary spot I'd consider a string tracker.  If you are hunting from an elevated stand and shooting a big boar there's a good chance you won't get a pass through which can mean little to no blood even on good hits (downward angle entry and no exit) so having a string tracker may save a nice pig for you.  I hunt them from tree stands and tripods but prefer the ground.  The are low to the ground and barrel shaped so it can be deceptive when uou think you "hit low" from an elevated shot.  

 I like to hunt the big boys after dark so a good headlamp or bow mounted light works.  Shot plenty of them walking to and from a stand in the dark so I always keep an arrow on the string.  

Have a blast.  I love hog hunting and consider them a bigger challenge to actually take (not necessarily shoot) than deer.

Your setup is adequate to kill most any hog.

We have many clients who hunt with 45# bows and on up.

Your arrow and broadhead selection is very good also.

Be sure to follow Terry's anatomy chart and recommended kill zone and you will be fine.

The shield can be tough to get through on a large hog.

I like your set-up.I fill my quiver with 3 Woodsmans and one Magnus 2 blade(in case a bruiser shows up). Never had an issue getting through the shield with a two blade head and heavy arrow(600gr+)on big hogs.
I shoot about 49# at my draw.

Sounds like a winner. 2 blades seem to do MUCH better on the sheild than anything else. At least to me. That and hitting them at an angle. I've known guys who take them clean and quick with 45lbs of draw.
