I took my standard approach to hunting in the Lowcountry of SC this year.  I waited until we had at least two hard frosts before going to the woods.  We've had 4 or 5 additional hard frosts since I first went hunting.

I've been out hunting 5 times, and the results, re, chiggers?  I would have to rate my plan a dismal failure.  I now have 30+ chigger bites on just my chest, stomach and shoulders!  :(   I have done a good job, for the most part, of not scratching the bite sites.  So they aren't bleeding and getting inflamed.  I'm going to have to come up with a different plan for 2014!!

It's this goofy weather. All it seems to take is one half warm day. Last week here it was in the 20's. Today it's 75,,ridiculous.

WildmanSC

I've only been out once with the temp above 70.  The other 4 times it's been in the 50s to low 60s.

Bill, I dont go in the woods when it is warm unless my clothes have been sprayed with Permethion(sp). No ticks or chiggers.

Crazy weather here in Tn too! Near 70 degrees yesterday, temps predicted to be in the teens next week. Rut came to a screeching halt! Hopefully the big boys will start chasing again next week!!!

I hate chiggers !, I spray everything I wear with Permethrin, and then I spray myself with Badgers, they haven't gotten past it yet.

Come to Wyoming! 15 below zero here this morning. That should take care of any chiggers.   :D

Just out of curiosity, how did you get them all over your chest, stomach and shoulders?  Chiggers were one of my least favorite things about growing up in Texas, but I remember getting them mainly on my legs between my sock line and my knee.

I thought I read on here once You were originally from Kansas. Come home.

It was 19 when I started work today and 18 when we quit. I don't have any Chigger bites today.

I even kicked around in the skiff of snow we got last night. Not one single Chigger.

Wildman, some folks are just tick and chigger magnets. Permethrin on clothes works well. I started 8/15 and so far no ticks or red bugs this year on me in the low country.

X2 on the permethrin!  I don't go in the woods without it!

Chiggers hit me from my ankles to my neck.  I haven't mentioned the chigger bites I have from the waist down, on my arms, back or neck!

I'll  be shopping for some Permethrin tomorrow!

Wow,
I was freezing my buns OFF a few days ago. Digging through my chest looking for anything that would layer, calling home ahead and begging my wife to make some decaf while I built a fire.
Today, 71 degrees and I was missing my Thermacell.
No chiggers though, or at least I didn't get into them.
I think the first of next week will give you some relief.

Joe,

I lived the first 23 years of my life in KS.  I got some of my worst cases of chigger bites while living back there.  Of course, I usually got those cases in the Spring or Summer while fishing or picking blackberries.

It is minus 12 here this morning, the chiggers are having a tough time of it. I was looking to buy some hunting land in eastern Iowa a while back, the number of deer ticks inspired me to push the price way down, but when those chigger bites flared up it was a no sale.

Yep. Same with our state bird (sketers for people that don't live here) I've herd it has something to do with the different blood types

I feel for you...I got bit up this summer for the first time ona fishing trip and I swear it was torture.  It was almost a week until they stopped itching and I didnt hardly sleep for 2 days before I got some stuff that made them quit itching.
