silver flame broadheads, xl xxl ????

I would love to hear some experience with these heads, preferably comparison of the same heads but different widths on large animals, big boarhogs or larger, as im sure they are all killers on deer or smaller.

All I use is Silverflames. I shoot 50# at my DL. I use the 150gr XL (1 1/2" wide) heads for deer and small hogs under 100#. I use 150gr regular heads (1 1/8" wide) for really big critters and big hogs over 100#.

I have a few of the 1 7/8" wide heads, but only use them on turkeys.

I have sucessfully taken all kinds of game from as small as squirrels to as big as a kudu with these heads.

I shoot the xl. Sharpest bh I have ever used. I have killed everything I have shot with them.

remember... wide is OK on a broadside shot. If there is any angle to the shot, the wider heads can hit with the side of the head and cause great wounds, but little or no penetration.

Just a thought.

Sorta happened to me.. twice. Both times I got lucky and the head did its job. Both were severe angles that I used to take with narrower heads.

Everything has to go wrong, but it has happened and will again. SF heads are pretty awesome though.

There are very few things on this planet as good at being what they are as the silver flame broadhead. Absolutely the very best head. I lost one over a cow elks back a few years ago and it still hurts.

Ha, I know what you mean, I have yet to lose one but I carry an arrow in my quiver with a 3 blade muzzy for shots at coyotes. I hate to fly a bh like a silverflame at a coyote, LOL! Just doesn't seem right somehow. Good hunting,Gary.

I'd love to try the XL if I had more confidence in my sharpening ability. At that price, I couldn't afford to use them as one and done heads.

jkm97, Get yourself a KME knife sharpener, they sharpen easily and its not that tuff! And they hold their edge better than any I have tried.

I use the knife model. It is pricey but worth it. I was always sharpening challenged until the KME. Now I can get a silverflame everybit as sharp as it was from factory, esp the XL. Not to mention a lot other 2 blade heads, gives you something to do after deer season while you wait to kill a turkey.

I use the XXL and have had great success with black bears out of a 46# A&H two piece. This season I shot a buck that was broadside to me. He jumped the string by turning low and away and I saw the arrow fly just in front of his neck. When I walked up to the arrow, the white fletching had no blood on it, but there was blood all over the leaves. Forty yards later I found the deer. The blade had sliced his neck just below the chin catching the artery. If I had been using standard 1 1/8" head the buck might still be walking around. I use a Diamond Finger sharpener by Furi - furitechnics.com. Because the steel is so hard on the siverflames they touch up perfectly with this sharpener. I have taken three bears with the same head just by quickly touching up the edge.

I have some from a close-out sale a couple of years ago. They look great but I haven't used them yet. I'm sure, had I not "discovered" single-bevel broadheads I'd be hunting with these.

Yea, I can understand that, I have some Abowyer Wapiti heads. They are also excellent and scary sharp. The KME gets them back to a new edge also!

I use the 180 gr XL. They've worked great on everything from hogs to wildebeest for me.

I hit a turkey with an XL a little high. Blood everywhere and strong trail for 75 yards, but he still flew off. That doesn't prove anything except that shot placement still wins out over a great broadhead. Oh and agree that they can get very sharp.
