I hunted one of my favorite stands in  WV this AM that I call the tater patch . We had the first snow of the year and it made for a beautiful morning. I hadn't been in the stand more than 10 minutes when a coyote came blasting by me . I queaked on the back of my hand but he was having none of it .

About 8:45 I saw a deer coming and she fed all the way to me on browse as we have no acorns here this year . I took a slightly quartering away shot and the hit looked very good , the deer went into a draw that is right below my stand and out of sight .
Since we can now take 2 deer in one day I stayed in the stand hoping to get a shot at a buck . About an hour later I heard Coyotes yipping down the hollow at what sounded like 500 yards near mt neighbors house which seemed odd .
A total of 1.5 hrs after the shot I climbed down and starting tracking which was difficult because the snow was melting rapidly . I found my deer about 125 yds of trail 80 yards from my stand  ,but the coyotes I heard had been on my deer. This picture is Grpahic .

Trapping is the key. We should all make it a goal to trap Them over the winter. A buddy in PA took 6 off a 200 acre farm. He saw an increase in turkey and deer the very next yr.

Roadkill

They hold a hunt in Elko County annually  Ladt year they killed 400.  The bastards ate my antelope this September-all of it.  I oew them now
I reloaded 22-250 rounds as their just reward.

I see canine, feline, and aerial hunters more as our brethren than enemies. They do a very good job of hunting and scavenging. It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it.

I hesitate to say this because I don't mean to offend you and I'm afraid you might take it as such, but honestly, this is what I'd think if it happened to me... if I hadn't decided to stay and wait for the chance at a buck, they wouldn't have had a chance at my doe. My 'greed', their feed. Next time I'll just take the doe and go.

Congrats on the deer by the way.

Jack Whitmire Jr

Bowjunkie you won't offend me saying that but I would have waited regardless because the deer acted weird after the shot . Sorta like it was gut shot but wasn't .I didn't say that in original post .The shot was good on disection .

Yes the coyotes have to eat also . But I have a vendetta with them they killed my Jack Russell Terrier a few years ago .Neighbor trapped 13 a few winters ago and it made a difference .

It may offend a few here but this is how I feel , the coyotes eat my deer they should eat the tag also . I will not  eat a deer that has been half eaten by coyotes , sorry but that is where I stand .

The Night Stalker

Jack , I agree with you about eating the deer.  You never know how many bite the meat and the chance of disease transfer through the saliva.  We have some small terriers and they killed several of our barn cats so I feel your pain. After one ate on of my doe kills, I decided to get some payback. I killed several and make it a after deer  season ritual  to kill as many as possible through various methods. That initial winter I trapped a big female and the tides turned. When it comes to controlling the coyote numbers, I think vigilance is the key due their reproduction rate.
