My son and I are planning a drop camp elk hunt in Colorado next fall.  Two outfitters that we have found that offer this service are Fishtail Ranch and Rainbow Lake Lodge. Has anyone used either of these outfitters and what are your thoughts?

You may not want to hear this answer, but here it is [I may as well say it cause it's inevitable    ].

Unless you absolutely need the services of an outfitter in terms of transportation or equipment, I'd say just do your research and go DIY.

I can't speak to those outfitters, but also consider llamas to get you back into the way-back.
Unless you don't have the gear necessary, it might be a viable option. llamas are very user friendly and easier than horses to tend, feed, water and lead.
Of course you want a comfy camp, but generally it is not really necessary to have a big wall tent,  and such.
Being able to have heat though, (and this season was a perfect example of why) is very very nice and maybe even a make or break the trip detail in terms of enjoyment.
Oh, and NEVER, EVER hunt a mtn basin you have not glassed thoroughly first.

Thanks for the input.  We have never hunted a western state and are looking for the experience.  We could pack our own gear and have a DIY hunt.  However, coming from a ranching background, packing in on horses sounds fun.  We really are just looking for someone reputable to pack us deep into a area with good game numbers. I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee for the service and a good experience.
