Ill be keeping eyes on this thread. I too would love to see pictures and hear story's about ground kills. Specifically natural ground blinds personaly!

My setup usually just consist of a comfortable chair and a tree with the wind in my face. I usually just wear solid tree looking colors. In early season I like old woodland camo and plaid shirts.

I can't stand sitting in a blind. Makes feel disconnected from the woods.

yes my mule deer was shot on the ground... 22 yard shot and about 50 60 yard recovery.

What did bowhunters do before the invention of the tree stand?

They shot deer from the ground!

Here's a story from a couple of weeks ago.....

I went bear hunting this weekend, wild adventures and experiences to say the least....but those stories will have to wait....

Saturday afternoon around 3:00 I was easing down the right side of a road bed when I saw a doe coming up a bank on my right out of nowhere.  She stepped out into the road about 10 yards ahead and looked right at me.  Get this,...she acted like I wasn't even there...looked ahead and walked across the road and scampered up a steep bank to the top and just stopped and started looking around left and right.....

I eased up the road a bit and crossed over to the left side of the road trying to find a shot, one which I would have to 'manufacture' to get into the goodies under the limbs.  I leaned right, squatted and laid a pretty sever cant on the bow.  After all she also was pretty severe...severely uphill and quartering away...

I drew the bow and released all in one motion and the arrow magically went right were I was looking.

The arrow made a very audible 'slice' sound as it entered and I saw the arrow still in her when she made her 1st leap, then I heard a 2nd leap and then nothing, nothing at all.  So I backed out.

Like I said, I was bear hunting, and was doing so with Tee Bone of Medicine Bear Archery, and one of his Badger Broadheads.  I knew Tee was still at the shooting course and hadn't left to hunt yet so I went to get him to help me as I needed to get back to bear hunting.

Here's what we found 8 yards from the impact....

Thanks for all your help this weekend Tee....I had a blast.  We'll have to get after those pesky squirrels one day.      

I shot  my first bear a few weeks ago using my Howard Hill longbow and my own wood arrows.  It was also on public land.

The 3pt Buck I shot last tuesday, was shot from my Stone Circle ground blind. The 2nd buck I've shot there over the last few years. My son Tyler drew on a nice long Spike last year but couldn't get a clear shot,so he let down. (there was "A" stick in the way! Ok,at 13...good call on his part!) He also passed on a nice fat little 4pt this year becauase he thought it was too far. (I've seen him shoot 3-D,and I KNOW he could have killed it. However, I WILL NOT tell him when to shoot! it's his call...)

Actualy, I have NEVER, killed a deer from a tree stand.....

(Missed a BUNCH though!!! lmao)

I shot this doe on the ground with only my pacseat and cabelas 3D-seclusion coat with hood.

Shot my doe as well on the ground, used my strap on tree seat,leafy camo top,and lots of camo makeup.I love ground hunting.

Love hunting from brush blinds or home made ground blinds.  I have almost exclusively for 2 years now.

This seasons doe at 8 yards.


Last years at a little over 15 yards.  


Both with a longbow and both with nothing over a  30-40 yard recovery.

Although mine is home made, I've found that one of these help make a few hours sit VERY comfortable!


I can set up a "ground blind" just about anywhere I want and make a move as need be dictated by the wind or circumstances.  

Best of luck to all who give hunting from the ground their best!  I just can not get used to a tree stand keeping me from moving when necessary or even get comfortable in one any longer.  Now that I've discovered hunting from the ground - at eye level - I crave it every day!

That is a huge beech, isn't it? Michigan has a "biggest trees" group that keeps records of the biggest trees, by species. I had a forester come out for that specific beech.

What he said was, if the trunk was one solid trunk, it'd actually be the biggest beech in Michigan. But it's not one solid trunk, it's actually multiple beech trees that fused together.

Either way, it's likely the biggest beech "combo" most will ever see and the cabin is built in it's shadow, so it makes a great place for pictures.    

I have one natural blind at the top on a hill line and another made of burlap as well as a natural brush pile that the kids can hide in.  Been busted a couple of times but soon I hope a deer will fail to notice me!
