I am spending most of next week at my Son's place in Grand Haven, Michigan.  Any suggestions for state or federal land that is available for hunting?

The Michigan DNR has a great website, with downloadable maps of all the public hunting areas. I haven't hunted that are at all, but there is buku state land. Lots of sandy terrain look for the jackpines and red oaks.

If you want to look into a couple large areas you could try the Allegan State Game Area and also the Barry State Game Area. From where you are in Grand Haven the Allegan State Game area would be handier. You could try a Google Earth search and see what you come up with or as Roger said the Mich DNR for maps.

I'd hit the Allegan SGA like Denny suggested. When I was going to carpentry school down there I'd see nice bucks a lot of mornings driving through.

You might also consider heading north to the muskegon state game area? I think that's what it is called. Should be some good areas in there, and closer than Allegan.

I live in Grand Haven. Your best bet is to hunt the Bass River Recreation Area IMO. Its close, has deer around, and lots of area to explore. Roger Norris hit it good as well. That DNR site has a good bunch of county by county info/maps that will show whats out there. There are a couple areas just outside G.H. that are "Commercial Forest" land. (private land that the public can hunt) these get a bit of use during the weekend, but through the week you could have them all to yourself. Grand Haven has a lot of deer just around the city limits. These areas are close to that. To the north,Muskegon State Game Area is there. But a guy almost needs a boat to access the good spots. To bad you won't be there November 11-14th or I'd take you to a few places. Good luck bud, hope you get a chance to get out and have a good hunt.  rat'

Also check the Michigan DNR site for CFR (commercial forest) land.  It is private land open to public hunting due to a very reduced tax rate on their land.

Actually it is referred to as CF land.  I just check for the Grand Haven area and there are 3 parcels that add up to just over 300 acres open to public hunting.

Thanks for the help!  I hope to get out next week!

Asked my son to check out areas with his buddies. One is a bowhunter!

Wulomac, I live in Muskegon and work in GH, I could meet up with you some evening and show you a couple places here in the Muskegon State Game Area. Headed up to camp til Sunday night later this morning, but PM if interested and we''ll set up a time when I get back if you're interested. It's only 20 miles north of GH, I live fairly close.

Wooddamon1:  I tried to send you a couple of PMs but computer difficulties kept me from getting through to you.  Thanks for your response.  Maybe next time!
