Temps are dropping and I guess I'm getting older and the cold seems to be getting to me more.  My cheapo camo pants and a pair of long underwear don't seem to be cutting it.  My old standby for real cold days is to add carhart bibs, but we are not near that cold yet.  Any recommendations on a good pair of cold weather pants, I looked at a thick pair of fleece natural wear camo yesterday....lots of choices.

Yup, wool pants and "expedition weight" long johns( not cotton).

Matty

I highly agree with Magnus. I get surplus wool pants. They are high waisted too so they cover 1/2 your belly.

Slasher

Wool works wonders! Add thin long johns as liners!
When looking for warmer I like the Columbia wool... Nice and quiet!

I have a pair of LL Bean camo wool pants I wear. Price was right at an outlet store. 50 bucks. Not the best wool but layer the with either mid weight of expedition weight polypropylene long johns and it makes for a good system. Coldest it gets in my neck of the woods durning hunting season is 10-15 degrees in the morning. And that is a couple odd days. On that rare occasion I use two layers of polypropylene together. Makes it interesting when you need to pee but you do stay warm.

I have Columbia wool . The wind goes through the garments pretty easy. I wish they were a tighter knit or came with a liner.

Yellow Dog

Cabelas Legacy Wool pants. Machine washable and they're on sale online right now. Good pants for the money, I have two pair.

Windstopper is the key--Try cabelas for fleece/windstopper pants-- they have some on sale now.

centaur

I got some Cabelas fleece pants that are lined and have worn them in 20 degree/30mph wind and stayed warm. I didn't have long johns on, so I'm thinking with long johns, they should be warm down to below zero, which is about as cold as I am willing to hunt in anymore. I have a pair of the Legacy wool pants on order; I expect them to be my go to pants during the whitetail rut.

I have KOM hillbilly bibs, I would rather hunt with my heater body suit.

29° right now and my Columbia wool bibs are treating me just fine.  Salvation Army marino wool sweaters and a Rancho Safari ghillie make up the other 1/2.

Wool pants all the way. I wear these (https://secure.armysurplusforless.com/productView.php?id=382) and am toasty warm! They do a cargo version in forest green too. Mine are big enough in the leg that I can fit two pairs of wool long johns underneath for when the temps really drop. Love them.

I bought the vest a few years back and loved it, so I got the pants as well.  They are warm and quiet.  Throw on my minus33 base layer underneath, and good to go.   I just kept an eye on cabelas website and waited for the wooltimate to go on sale.   It does every year.
