Rainy day story - I hung a stand on Monday eve but didn't have  chance to hunt it until this eve after work. We had about a 1 hour break in the heavy heavy rains. It s just the right hour too. I wasn't even up my stand right when a big old doe stepped out of the corn to eat from chestnuts my 4 chestnut trees. She got spooky in the swirling wind and came at me confused and ready to run. I have been saying I don't hesitate on 1/4 to shots but I really would prefer the opposite. Again the only shot was 1/4 to at 10 yards. I let her rip with a 60lb@31 Black widow and gold tip with 175 gr 3 blade VPA. The hit was high on the shoulder angled down and back. ( you won't hear that in the main stream bow hunting magazine) My string caught the strap of my back pack and slowed the arrow some. Penetration was just short of poking through the opposite side of the deer. But it looked like less penetration. This is first deer I ever shot with a stick bow that didn't have an exit hole. Blood was fair, but hard to see in the wet conditions, rain was coming soon.

I got down right away, and checked out the situation. Re-thinking it I was pretty sure the arrow was deep enough. About a foot into the deer. She had run violently into the corn and crashed away. I had a hard time seeing blood because it was so wet.
Fortunately my old Blood tracking dog was back at the house and ready to go.

Molly is a 10 yr old wire haired dachshund bred for blood tracking and she earned her keep. We got the deer in 10 minutes and before the next downpour! The doe was dead about 150 yrd into the corn. The 175 gr VPA got all the way to her heart.  My daughter and wife help track. Here is Molly when she made the find trying to claim it for herself!

In hole. It would have come low and behind the leg on the other side. The arrow was about 1/2" short of making it through. Hitting my backpack with the bow string didn't help.  It gave the arrow just a little wiggle

Youtube video of Molly when she gets to the deer and takes ownership. It's not like when you train a house dog. I have found you need to let her really think it's hers. Molly is the friendliest dog when she is not tracking. And she is rarely tracking. This is a big deal to her.
