Best Broadhead for Pigs with 45 Pound Bows??

Hey all,

I have a recurve and a longbow, both shoot at 45 pounds, maybe a tad more. I am going to start pig hunting soon and would like some advice on what broadheads would be the best to use.

Right now I have some of the Woodsmans at 125 grains, Magnus Stingers at 125 grains and Bear Vintage Razorheads, the green ones and I don't know what they weigh.

I know whatever I choose MUST BE razor sharp.

Since my bow weight isn't that high, would some heads be better than others on hogs?
What broadheads would you suggest would be the best for me to use when I hit the field after the hogs down here in Texas?

I prefer a single bevel head. Something like the Meat Head or Zwickey No Mercy etc.

consider having a read of Dr. Ashby's broadhead and arrow penetration results. he worked out an arrow/ broadhead system to get consistent lethal penetration on adult water buffalo with a 40lb recurve.

Number one most important is that the arrow and broadhead including all the hardware, dont break or bend on impact.

he found that if you hit bone, the single bevels are much better. in soft tissue no big difference, also a longer, slimmer head like a grizzly gives better penetration that a short stocky one.

there is a top 10 of the most important factors. for people like me shooting relatively small bodied goats with 60lb bows, it doesnt matter as much since i get complete pass thrus every time.

but for yourself, with a big hog and a lighter bow, it makes sense to take the effort to give yourself the best chance at a humane kill.

Grizzly El Grande or another of the 200-225 grain single bevel heads. I can't tell you how many hogs I have killed with the Grizz heads with bows at 45#. They have performed flawlessly.

lots of good choices, but tackle must also be matched to your shooting skills, the size of the hog yer about to shoot, the distance of the shot, and how sharp the pointy end of yer arrow is.

i love wensel woodsmans and a 50# holding weight. if i dropped down in bow weight i might consider a long two blade, a heavy arrow, and short shots.

I use a 175 grain 3 blade VPA and have had great results. I make sure my broadheads are sharp. I've never had a problem. Shot several with a 44 pound longbow with complete pass thrus.

Single bevel broadheads seem to shine best for us lower weight bow shooters. Couple that with a heavier shaft and you can pretty much hunt any size game you want IMO...........Art

At the age of 15 I began hunting hogs in our SC swamps with the Legend Owen Jeffery, and he taught me everything I know about the porkers.

Owen would only shoot a three bladed broadhead and more specificaly a snuffer 125 or 150. He would shun anyone that shot a 2 bladed broadhead because more often than not the entrance and exit wound would seal up because of the amount of fat under their skin. We lost many hogs hunting with folks shooting two bladed broadheads because of this. People worry about penetration, but Owen shot a 40 lb recure with 2013 shafts and a 125 snuffer and would zip right through them, even on 300 lb hogs. This of course being done with well placed shot low behind the shoulder.

This being said, I have stuck to this notion over the years, and currently shoot a 250 heritage with a 125 montec and a 50 grn brass insert out of my hog setup which is a 54# royal hunter. These prove to have great penetration, as well as a heavy blood trail.

This is my position and I hope it helps in your bacon quest.

Me too! I use 1 1/8" heads on the big boars to get all the penetration I can, and I use 1 1/2" heads on the smaller pigs for the bigger holes.

A couple seasons ago I had good luck on a handful of pigs with a 45# bow and Stingers... I'd lean towards the 4 blades assuming everything is super charp.

A sharp Magnus two blade is tough to beat on hogs.We see all different bow and arrow broadhead combinations in camp, most of them work well.
I have switched to a 3 blade Woodsman myself(I shoot 50#), for the simple fact that it may give me ONE more drop of blood on the ground than a two blade. One drop can be the difference between finding the pig and not.
Having said that, the last hog I killed was with a two blade Magnus Stinger, unbelievable bloodtrail.(heart shot)

Just saw this.... I shoot snuffers exclusively as they've done the job for me for years.... Knowing where the boiler room of a pig is helps as its a little more forward lower than seems like in other game. 45 pounds is plenty for a pig, especially with snuffers in my experience.

lots of choices out there , right now I have some Abowyer brown bears that are scary sharp and fly great. Choose a good sharp solid head that flies well and you will be ok.

I would be inclined to go with either a long narrow multiblade head like a woodsman or a wider 2 blade like Magnus I or Zwickey Deltas. I believe that with your bow weight those heads would give you plenty of penetration on just about any hog you're going to run into to and cut a big enough hole to leave a decent blood trail.
