How many of you have gone on extended hunts where you didn't want to take the big game?  Maybe tags were too expensive, or that critter didn't appeal to you as much as it did to your buddy, or for some other reason, you just stepped aside from the beginning?

Instead, you hunted small game, enjoyed the trip, manned the camera, fished, etc. ?
Life is a whole lot easier when you just plow around the stump.

I have done that for hunting pals before. Its not always the killing that is the hunt it is the experiance.

Oh yeah.  My brother and I always apply seperatly when applying for hard to draw hunts to increase our odds of drawing.  One of my most memorable hunts was giving up my elk season to tag along with him when he drew an AZ elk tag.   I didn't have anything to focus on except enjoying myself and helping him get his elk.  He has helped me pack  several bulls out of some real hell holes and never once comlained, I was proud to return the favor and honestly couldn't have been more excited if I'd have shot the bull myself.

There are three guys going on this year's elk hunt who have never shot an elk.  As much as I'd like to take another, I'd gladly let one of them take a shot at an elk before I did............It is such a rush.  That said, I rarely hunt with someone else on a day-to-day basis - but if it happens I would have no problem with it.

I put two young men on to 2 bigs bucks this past year. Both bigger than anything I have killed. Both had never even shot a deer before killing these two bucks! Shawn

I dont have many hunting buddies that would allow me to step aside for them. I'll do it for my sons until the day comes that they wont accept that either.

Heading to Utah in ten days to do just that.Hope to help my buddy take an extraordinary elk.I get as much if not more enjoyment from my friends hunts as my own

i have bought cow tags in Co. when my friends bought bull tags, the horns just wasnt that big of a deal,  then i passed on the cows, the trip was just so awesome killing that cow would have detracted from the experience if that makes any sense, i have also put friends and my wife on big deer, maybe they hadnt killed one or something, as I age, i mellow alot and still enjoy killing the game and using every part of it, but its not a must have part of the hunt any more...

Back in '95, just opened my shop and my high school Biology teacher asked if he could hunt with me during rifle season here in NY.

I took him out...placed him in MY natural ground blind...at my favorite State Park spot...told him not to move and watch the rim as deer like moving around this knob.

I left him at 7:20....at 8am this guy walks by and offers a 10 yd quartering away shot. His first bow kill ever and I was just as excited as he was.

"Neal...is this heaven?" "No Piute but we are dam close". Top of the Mtn in Medicine Bow Nat Forest.

I will always step aside provided its a great hunt!  I dont have much space on my wall for trophies but always try to pack in the memories in the cranial locker!  I love to relive old hunts with friend through stories.

If my vacation days would have worked out this year I would have tagged along on my first elk trip. I'm sure I would have enjoyed just as much with less pressure.

I need a new job!  :banghead:
This stuff ain't no rocket surgery science!

Been there, done that and I enjoy that more than anything.
Those are memories.

Family of course, guests, and good hunting buddies all get preferred treatment. I've been on both ends of the deal and it is a good feeling all the way around.

I'd nock Izzy down and step on his head to get a shot at a pig though.

Gregg wouldn't have to knock you down.  Just sleep in the same room and his snoring will keep you awake, then you'll be asleep when the big one comes along!

Matty

Sharing in the moment is just as much fun. Really.. Who cares who releases the arrow.  Or makes the kill.  I get just as much satisfaction, maybe even more. Being in the moment.  Is so much fun.
