Has anyone hunted the Corps Of Engineer land around Truman Reservoir, and what did you think of it? I'm considering buying a retirement home near Warsaw and  I'm very curious about the deer hunting on the public land. Any input would be much appreciated.

Lots a good hollows, draws, bottoms and brush...and TONS of land.  A lot of Corps land is over looked.  I have seen some great deer come from land around that area as well as Corp land around Mark Twain Lake.

It is tough hunting, but you can easily find areas to get away from others during bow season.  It won't quite compare to private land, but there is a lot of it (Truman has something like 110,000 acres of Corps land)and there are plenty of deer.  Missouri is generous with their firearms seasons and they have alternative weapons season, doe season, etc. The rifle season is crazy on much of corps land.

You can find nice deer on the public land though. I had a 180" deer bed 60 yards from me last year... for 5 1/2 hours!!!  Thought I was going to die! :-)   I really enjoyed watching the ol' boy.  Killed a decent 10 pointer on public last season.

Thanks guys for the info. I'll be coming down next weekend to have a look around. I've heard a lot of good things about the hunting as well as the fishing down there. I'm pretty much strictly a public land hunter, so I no the the whole routine with the firearm seasons and hunting pressure. If i manage to afford an out of state tag, I will look you up for sure Manitou1. Thanks for the shout.

Dude retire in iowa, you can hunt big mo over the counter, unless you just have to be near the lake.

Lots of deer by the lake.
